This Resort Is the Easiest Family Trip We’ve Taken (And My Kid Is Obsessed)
When I found myself planning an impromptu trip for our family while 35 weeks pregnant, my tolerance for complicated travel plans was basically nonexistent. Our goal was to soak up some special time with my daughter before baby number two arrives—but planning a big trip with flights, packing lists, and an itinerary sounded like more work than I could handle. Enter: My rinse-and-repeat travel destination that goes triple platinum in our house.
When we want a family trip that feels special without a ton of planning, we default to Kalahari Resorts & Conventions. We first took our daughter right before she turned two, back when leaving the house required five sleep contraptions and half her closet. What I realized then—and still love now—is that you really don’t need to bring much. Their all-under-one-roof setup has everything you could need, which makes it incredibly easy for families.
It’s kid-forward and adult-friendly, which is a rare combo. Between my toddler’s deep love for it, the amenities, and the fact that it’s only an hour from our house, it was a no-brainer for a getaway that felt easy rather than exhausting. Kalahari Review: What Makes It So Easy for Families
Living in Texas, Kalahari’s Round Rock location (Home to America’s Largest Indoor Water Park) is our go-to—and it is massive. Like, small-city massive. Even going multiple times, we still haven’t seen it all. There’s so much to do with a little kid, and each visit gets better as she gets older and braver. Here’s everything we love about this destination:
The Waterparks (Indoor + Outdoor) Make It a Year-Round Destination
They have both an indoor and outdoor waterpark, so we’ve visited during every season. As a Texas mom, I especially love that so much of the resort is indoors. No worrying about the weather or brutal heat, no sunscreen battles, and plenty of nearby clean bathrooms.
Free kid life jackets and easy access to everything make the day so much smoother. Plus, the towel check-in/check-out system is another underrated perk. You grab towels inside the water park and return them before you leave, which means one less bulky thing to pack.
With a truly endless amount of activities and rides in the water park to keep her entertained, it also gave my body a break from nonstop play duty. Being able to sit and chat with a friend while the kids splashed with my husband felt like a mini vacation inside the vacation. There was no need for me to constantly invent an agenda to keep her busy.
Staying On-Site Makes the Trip Easier
We’ve done both day trips and overnight stays at Kalahari, and I will always vote for staying on-site. It’s cost-effective, gives you more park time, and makes naps and resets easy. You can walk everywhere quickly and never even need to leave the property.
Most importantly, the rooms are designed with parents in mind. There’s a microwave, mini fridge, and sink, so we bring milk, a few snacks, and refillable water bottles and call it good (I’ve literally packed more for a day at the grandparents’).
The blackout curtains make the room incredibly dark, and despite the busy resort, it stays quiet and cozy. The beds are also genuinely comfortable—which my husband would absolutely complain about if they weren’t.
And when you stay on property, your wristband works as both your room key and credit card. No wallet, no digging through bags. Paying for food and getting back into the room is as easy as tapping your wrist.
Overall, you can just feel that everything is made to make families with little ones feel at ease, and that is such a game-changer.
Beyond the Water Park, There’s Still So Much to Do
If your little ones aren’t into water parks, there’s no need to worry. Beyond the water park, we spent a lot of time at the on-site arcade and indoor amusement area, Tom Foolerys Adventure Park, and it was a huge hit.
My daughter loved swiping her own game card and trying everything herself, even when she needed help. You can preload game cards so kids don’t need cash, and tickets are stored digitally.
Watching her celebrate every tiny win was so sweet. Plus, there are plenty of places for parents to sit and rest while staying close, which makes a big difference when you’re pregnant or just tired (aren’t we all?).
One of my favorite parts of trips to Kalahari? The food.
From poolside pizza and fries to full sit-down restaurants, there are endless options. My husband and daughter are picky eaters, and this is one of the only places where neither of them struggles to find something they like. Meanwhile, I can still get a steak, salad, or something that feels like a real grown-up meal and not feel stuck eating off the kids’ menu.
Not having to leave the property to feed everyone is huge. No loading up the car, no Googling nearby restaurants, no hangry meltdowns—just options everywhere you turn.
Some of our tried-and-true spots:
B-LUX Grill & Bar: Our go-to for a fun, easy meal that still tastes great. It’s right inside the amusement area, which earns major bonus points. Burgers and fries for the kids, more elevated options and shareables for adults, plus bowling and a full bar. It somehow feels kid-friendly and date-night adjacent at the same time.
Double Cut Steak House: Perfect for a true grown-up dinner. We went on a previous trip for a birthday, and it felt like stepping into a swanky standalone restaurant. Calm, cozy, and ideal if you want one special meal during your stay.
The Last Bite: Ice cream, candy, and all the sweet things. Always a must-stop for my daughter—and this trip, very pregnant me was equally enthusiastic.
Great Karoo Marketplace: A massive breakfast buffet with just about everything you could want. If it exists in the breakfast world, it’s probably here.
Shari’s Daiquiri Bar: A fun grab-and-go drink stop near the attractions. Pre-pregnancy me loved this as a quick treat while walking around.
Parent Perks That Make It Feel More Balanced
One thing I really appreciate about the resort overall is that while it’s very kid-focused, it doesn’t forget about the parents.
In addition to the water park and attractions, there are on-site amenities designed for grown-ups who might want a little recharge time during their stay. There’s a full-service spa and salon offering treatments like massages, facials, and beauty services, plus a fitness center for anyone who wants to keep up their routine while traveling.
Even having those options available on the property makes the trip feel more balanced and flexible—especially on a longer stay. I didn’t personally book a service this trip, but knowing those spaces were there added to the feeling that the experience is built for the whole family. Next time, a massage is absolutely first on my list.
Tips to Make Your Trip to Kalahari Feel Easy

The Bottom Line: Kalahari is a Win for the Whole Fam
This trip struck that rare balance of being convenient while still feeling special. I never felt like I had to choose between taking care of myself and letting my toddler have the best time ever.
The resort feels safe, well thought-out, and genuinely family-first. In fact, Kalahari commissioned a survey recently which found that 85 percent of parents say a destination where lodging, dining, and activities are all in one place is moderately or extremely appealing. I wholeheartedly agree.
As the chief packer and planner in our house, I’m sold on any trip that doesn’t require hauling our entire life with us. We came home with barely anything to unpack, which might be the most underrated luxury of all.
With locations in Wisconsin, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas—and another opening in Virginia in late 2026—it’s an easy, repeatable getaway for families all over the country.
We made sweet memories and soaked up this season of being a family of three in a way that felt easy rather than exhausting. My daughter is already asking when we can go back with her baby sister.
