I was recently on vacation in Florida, and stopped dead in my tracks in the middle of a souvenir store when I saw a mom wearing an adorable green checkered baby carrier. I couldn’t believe how cute she looked with this carrier covering half her outfit! Upon further investigation, it was the Mabē Monarch Carrier. As soon as I returned to work, I brought this carrier up to the rest of the team. This sparked the conversation: What’s the best baby carrier and how do you choose one?

I then polled the moms on our team, which includes everyone from expecting, first-time moms to seasoned moms of multiple children. It seemed that Artipoppe, WildBird, Mabē, Ergobaby, and BabyBjörn where the ones that came up the most, so we did a deep dive into each one. Below, you’ll find firsthand reviews from moms who have actually used these carriers. We’re answering the questions you really want to know: Is the Artipoppe worth its expensive price tag? Does style matter? Do different carriers work better for different lifestyles? Will my husband like to wear it (do I care 🤪)? Read all about and shop the best baby carriers—according to real moms—below.

Artipoppe Zeitgeist Baby Carrier

I purchased the Artipoppe carrier as a push present to myself and used it regularly from the newborn stage until after my daughter’s first birthday. It was very easy to put on and readjust as my daughter grew, easy to clean (yes, even blow out stains), and super lightweight—which is a huge plus during the summertime. It was slimmer and easier to move in than my WildBird Aerial carrier, so I found myself reaching for it more often.

But if you’re on a budget, I won’t say it’s worth double the price. The Artipoppe is only a worthwhile investment if you’re willing to splurge or split the cost with someone else, especially if it’s the only carrier you plan to purchase. I’d also like to note that I was able to sell my Artipoppe for $180 two years after using it, so you could potentially make some of your money back in the future.

Unfortunately (because of the hefty price tag), the Artipoppe is really great. It took me a minute to get the hang of adjusting the straps and getting it on by myself. But now that I have the process down, it’s quick and easy. I love that I can easily convert it from face-in to face-out, and my baby seems to love being in it. I’ve worn this for 45+ minutes walking around during a nap with no discomfort, which is a big plus. What really sold me was the fact that I can use it until she’s 45 pounds (and there’s no height limit!). It can also convert to a back carry position which my husband will love when she’s older.

WildBird Aerial Buckle Baby Carrier

I had two under two, so baby wearing was truly the only way I could do anything around the house during the first year of my youngest’s life. I tried quite a few types of carriers, and WildBird’s Aerial carrier was one of my favorites. It was easy to strap on quickly at home and on the go, fit my baby from newborn to toddler, and was aesthetically pleasing yet more affordable than high-end carriers. I did occasionally feel discomfort in my hips when my daughter got older/bigger, but that could’ve been because of my smaller stature. Since I also had the Artipoppe, I feel WildBird is a great alternative that has a similar look but is half the price.

Mabē Monarch Carrier

When I first started looking at baby carriers, I envisioned something easy to put on and take off myself, cute enough to wear with anything I had on, and not too expensive. What I didn’t realize when I started this search is how ugly baby carriers can be and how expensive they are. As it turns out, I’m not the only mom who’s had this problem. Mabē carriers were designed for moms exactly like me, who want the function of some of the best baby carriers on the market, as well as the aesthetic of the pricier options.

I know looks aren’t everything (we’re just trying to get by out here!). But if the only real difference between the Mabē carrier and the next is that this one looks a little nicer and doesn’t cost as much, I’m going with Mabē. Like many other carriers on the market, they can be worn forward-facing, outward-facing, and as a back carrier for babies up to 35 pounds. Needless to say, the fact that this carrier can grow with my baby is a huge plus. As another bonus, Mabē carriers are made of lightweight, breathable fabric—which is going to be crucial when my baby gets here in the summer.

Ergobaby Carriers

I’ve used the Ergobaby Omni Breeze with both of my kids. It has been helpful with transitioning from one to two, as my eldest is very busy and wants to run around and play constantly. With the Omni Breeze, it’s allowed me to be hands-free and still carry my little one through playtime. I recently went on a trip where I had to walk around with my baby for three hours, and I give the back support it provides an A+. He napped comfortably the whole time, my back didn’t hurt, and its mesh material has kept both of us cool on a hot summer day. I can’t fail to mention that a big bonus to this carrier is that it can also hold a toddler up to 45 pounds! Plus, my husband loves wearing it too.

I already had a baby carrier, but decided to register for the Ergobaby Embrace with my second. I wanted something that was cute, easy to put on, and didn’t “swallow” my newborn. Plus, it was easy to fold up into my diaper bag, and it didn’t take up too much space (I needed all the room I could get). I also love that the Ergobaby Embrace is so soft—it feels like a blanket!

BabyBjörn Baby Carriers

The BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Mini was one of my favorite (and most used) products in the newborn stage. I tried a few different carriers as a freshly postpartum mom, and this one was by far the least overwhelming to figure out by myself and the most comfortable to wear. The buckles are easy to access and quick to clip into, and I felt like I could adjust the support on it without worrying about waking my little guy up.

It’s definitely a smaller style, so it looked a little funny and tight on my 6-foot-2 husband, but even still, he preferred this to our other wrap-style carriers. Thanks to its ability to be shoved into the diaper bag, it went absolutely everywhere with us. I wore it daily, for multiple hours at a time, as soon as my son was 7 pounds (which is the minimum weight requirement). I think it’s fully worth the price—especially since he is now 10 months old and still hasn’t outgrown its 24-pound limit.

I have the BabyBjörn Baby Carrier Free 3D Mesh in Dusty Pink. This carrier is super comfortable (no digging) and was really easy for me to get on by myself. However, after wearing for 30+ minutes while walking around, I did start to feel some back pain. This carrier also only goes up to 26 pounds, and I stopped using it when she hit 20 because it started to feel too small. I do think this is a good one to keep in your car and use for short periods of time!
