3 Editors Share Their Go-To Way to Style Leggings for Fall

Leggings were a middle school favorite for me, paired with a flannel shirt and hiking boots—hello ’90s grunge. But do you remember when leggings came back in style? Putting on a great pair of leggings in adulthood was like reconnecting with an old friend, and I’m so happy they’ve become a mainstay in my wardrobe again.

The pair of leggings you now wear on repeat probably hold you up (and hold you in) wherever you need them to. They go with literally everything and are the perfect base for so many outfits that work well with motherhood—when you need to move around comfortably and wash them easily.

Maybe you have a favorite pair for each occasion: the workout ones, the fancy pair, and the everyday go-to. I’ve found some of my very favorites from a brand I’ve been wearing for years: Lyssé. Depending on the specific style (and they have many!), the brand’s leggings either feature a patented, 360-degree Secret-Slimming Waistband or a LysséFit Signature 5” Waistband, which both include tummy-smoothing qualities and provide a perfect fit for moms, regardless of size or shape.

Designed to hug and sculpt yet offer complete freedom of movement for day to night comfort, Lyssé leggings include flattering seams, varied hem lengths, wrinkle-resistant fabric, four-way stretch, strategically-placed pockets, and most importantly, wash easily right at home.

Below, three of our editors are sharing how leggings complement our daily style and how we’re planning to work these staples into our fall wardrobe with the help of pieces from Lyssé’s fall collection.

Tell us about your typical style—what are your favorite mom uniform pieces to wear for everyday looks right now?

I’d describe my style as comfy-casual, even before this extended time at home. I love finding a few investment pieces that fit well, allow me to sit on the floor to play with my two kids, but still help me feel a little pulled together (stress on the “little” since my family or the grocery store staff are the only people who see me right now). T-shirts with details like screenprint graphics, v-necks, or knots have been a summer staple.

How do you plan to transition these pieces into fall? And why are leggings your fall wardrobe essential?

Leggings have been a wardrobe must-have for years now. Depending on the fabric, you can dress them up or down, they move with your body, and high-waisted styles hold everything in and up just right. My fall style is all about layering and leggings are the perfect base.

My daily go-to outfit usually includes leggings, one of my staple solid tees, layered with a long sweater, and slip-on sneakers. When I want to feel that little bit more polished or put together, I reach for my faux leather leggings, paired with a blouse and booties.

What makes Lyssé leggings different from others?

After I had my second baby, a friend recommended Lyssé leggings to me because she said their waistline was perfect for postpartum belly support. She was right. Lyssé leggings blend a simple, pull-on style with a body-flattering seaming and smoothing inner waistband. They’re designed to hug and sculpt, yet offer complete freedom of movement for day to night comfort. I bought my first pair four years ago after the birth of my daughter, and they’ve held up so well. I love their new hi-waist faux leather leggings with the front seam. You can really dress them up for date night or pair with a sweatshirt for a more casual look.

I also know I’m going to live in Lyssé’s Minna sweater throughout the fall and winter. I’m one of those people who’s always cold, so having a long, drapey sweater fits my comfy-casual plus cozy style. And the front pockets on this sweater make it a little more fun than my other long sweater staples. Lysse’s pieces are so timeless and versatile; this works so well for cool, summer nights and will fit seamlessly into my cold-weather wardrobe.

Tell us about your typical style—what are your favorite mom uniform pieces to wear for everyday looks right now?

My style leans very casual in a general sense. I’m definitely a jeans and T-shirt kind of girl, for everything from school pick-up/drop-off, running errands, and nights out. If there’s an opportunity to wear jeans and a T-shirt, I will for sure figure out a way to style it appropriately for the situation. During this stay-at-home period, however, that has evolved into more of a joggers-and-T-shirt situation. I’m very comfortable, but I have to say, I do feel a bit sloppy from time to time when I’m out on my daily walks or running a quick grocery errand.

How do you plan to transition these pieces into fall? And why are leggings your fall wardrobe essential?

Since I’m looking to upgrade my look a bit for fall without sacrificing any of the comfort factor, I’ve been on the hunt for a great pair of soft, cozy denim leggings that can transition from casual to dressed up. Leggings that are well-made and high-quality can really work with any outfit situation and so, are a great piece to invest in.

In the fall, leggings are easy to tuck into boots for an outing and also throw on with sneakers on warmer, more active days. I know I’ll always get a lot of use out of them and they can be worn in a number of different ways. But they have to fit well and be comfortable. I can’t tell you the number of leggings I have that dig into my stomach or waist, are way too tight, or basically fall apart after a wash.

What makes Lyssé leggings different from others?

These Kara Split Leggings by Lyssé are incredible for a number of reasons. For one, though they look like black denim, they feel like sweatpants, and I’m really not exaggerating. Lyssé’s custom fabrics are impeccable, and these are made from a knit denim material that is so soft and comfortable. What helps is the wide smoothing panel on the inside waistband of the leggings—it prevents the waistband from cutting into your lower stomach, so you can wear them for a longer period of time without any discomfort.

There’s a good amount of stretch, but they have enough structure too, so they look like a pant and not activewear—which makes me look put together without actually having to wear real pants. My favorite feature is definitely the split at the ankle. I abhor having to peel leggings off of my body at the end of the day and getting my feet stuck in the super skinny legs. The split ankle not only looks pretty edgy when you’re wearing them (which I love), but also makes taking these leggings on and off really hassle-free.

Topping off this easy look with the Trina Foiled Vegan Leather Jacket is perfect for fall. Nothing elevates a casual look like a great faux leather jacket and this is one of the best I’ve ever tried. The material is soft and the foiled aspect of it makes it look very similar to real leather, without any of the guilt (or the hefty price tag!). The fit, which I usually really struggle with when it comes to finding a good jacket, is wonderful, and the unique cut makes me feel a lot cooler than I actually am. When I inevitably fall back into my jogger-wearing rut, I could see this jacket being the thing to upgrade that look from “pajamas” to “Gwen Stefani.” (I’m not a regular mom, I’m a cool mom.)

Investing in Lyssé’s pieces is always a no-brainer because of their quality. I know what I’m buying is going to work for my wash-and-go lifestyle, fit my style, and last for a long time. As a busy, working mom, this brand is a go-to.

Tell us about your typical style—what are your favorite mom uniform pieces to wear for everyday looks right now?

Right now, my style is incredibly casual. I’m working from home and taking care of my 1-year-old daughter, so on a daily basis I depend on comfortable and functional pieces. I’m always in leggings, usually paired with a loose-fitting T-shirt or tank top and sweatshirt combo. Often I’m in workout clothes, hoping to sneak in a workout while my daughter naps, but it also feels good to put on dressier and more form-fitting clothes. I swear it improves my mood and makes me a more productive person. I love the Lyssé leggings for my non-workout option because they have the right amount of structure while still being incredibly comfortable.

How do you plan to transition these pieces into fall? And why are leggings your fall wardrobe essential?

I wear leggings all year round, but fall is probably the best season for leggings. Leggings are perfect for cooler weather, and I usually pair my leggings with a long sweater, or a thin long-sleeve shirt and a big scarf. As for shoes, I will either wear a casual sneaker or a cute flat with my leggings.

What makes Lyssé leggings different from others?

Though I wear leggings pretty much every day, the Lyssé leggings don’t feel like my other leggings. They are more structured, thicker (the fabric is amazing!), and feel more dressed up than my workout leggings, which is what I’m usually wearing. It feels really good to put on real clothes and to feel more put together, and these Signature Center Seam Lyssé leggings do just that. These leggings feature the LysséFit Signature Waistband, which is a 5-inch exposed waistband—it’s extremely flattering and helps to make these leggings among the best fitting and most comfortable that I own.

I could easily wear these to an office (if and when that ever happens again), out to a friend meet up, or even to dinner. Because they wear like a pant but feel like a legging, these are definitely a foundational piece in my wardrobe, just like this jacket. Lyssé’s Essential Moto jacket is perfect for topping off any legging outfit. The 4x-stretch Vegan Suede is totally luxe-looking, but get this: it’s machine washable! I know that these pieces are going to be a staple in my look for years to come.
