What’s on your child’s holiday wishlist this year? My oldest’s letter to Santa includes a live guinea pig, 1,000 wolf stuffed animals, and $300. And while her list was for Santa’s eyes only, I can definitely say that none of those items are showing up under the tree (and not just because her room is already filled with what feels like 1,000 stuffed animals).
With the holiday shopping season underway, it’s easy to get swept into Black Friday deals and the must-get toys of the moment. This year, I’m trying to stick to the gift-giving philosophy of something they want, something they need, and something to read. If you’re also looking for a meaningful gift, like something they could read, enjoy, and might actually learn from, check out the Little People, Big Dreams series. From athletes to artists and scientists to activists, the series introduces kids to some of the world’s most famous folks.

The Little People, Big Dreams series can help our little ones understand—and be inspired by—the famous people and world changers featured in the books because their stories all began as little kids, too. They’re also fun to read together because parents can learn alongside our little ones. Plus, the illustrations are bright, quirky, and delightful, with covers perfect to adorn nursery and playroom shelves.
Read on for some of our favorite books and other gift picks from the Little People, Big Dreams series, based on your child’s personalities and interests.
For the Entertainers
Learn how comedian Mindy Kaling went from being a little girl who loved movies—and to make people laugh—to becoming a famous TV writer, actor, author, and producer. Featuring music superstars Ella Fitzgerald, Dolly Parton, and Josephine Baker, this three-book set is sure to inspire little music lovers and entertainers. As a kid, playing dress-up was little Ru’s favorite game, and that’s when he felt most comfortable. As an adult, Ru wanted to help others find ways to express and love themselves too.
For the Competitors
Introduce legend Michael Jordan to the younger generation with this inspiring story of little Michael who didn't even make the basketball team during his first tryout but went on to become one of the best players of all time. Learn more about athlete and activist Megan Rapinoe, who didn't always fit in at school but was a star on the soccer field. Her skills, passion, and leadership later helped take Team USA to Olympic Gold and a World Cup victory. This memory matching game features 20 outstanding women from the series.
For the Artists
Perfect for toddlers, this bright board book introduces little ones to some iconic artists—like Frida Kahlo, Andy Warhol, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. This three-book set features the true stories of how three different artists overcame hardships: fashion icon Coco Chanel, famed painter Frida Kahlo, and iconic performer Audrey Hepburn. Let your own little artist show their creative side with this coloring book, featuring 15 famous folks from the Little People, Big Dreams series.
For the Future Change-Makers
The beloved First Lady of the United States was once a little girl from the South Side of Chicago. With her love of school, she blazed trails at Princeton and Harvard, met her future husband Barack Obama, and continues to use her platform for good. Meet three inspirational figures from Black culture and history: Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., and Rosa Parks in this three-book set. Learn how the fierce activist for girls' education became the inspiring person she is today. How did little Cory grow up to be the first female president of the Philippines? With a commitment to justice and incredible courage. Introduce little ones to her moving story. This set is at the top of my shopping list for my nature-loving daughter. It features the stories of famed primatologist Jane Goodall, young environmentalist Greta Thunberg, and David Attenborough, whom my daughter will recognize from the Planet Earth series we love to watch together. Learn how a rebellious teen eventually became known as one of the world's greatest peacemakers in this kid-friendly story of Mahatma Gandhi.
