When I was pregnant with my first kid, I put a painstaking amount of effort into creating the “perfect” playroom. It had to have Montessori-style open shelves with wooden toys that I would rotate every few months. Surely, that’d make me a perfect mom, right? My kids are now 4 and 2.5—ask me how many toy rotations I’ve actually done. The answer: none. That Pinterest-inspired, minimal playroom is a distant dream, now replaced with Paw Patrol action figures and buckets of Hot Wheels. And side note? The idea of being a perfect mom is a total myth.
I’ve already made peace with this more realistic version of our play space, but I still search for ways to revamp it to reignite my kids’ interest. Cause one thing about kids? They’ll always be “bored,” no matter how many toys and activities they have (🙄). And now that they’re exiting the small toddler phase, they’re getting harder to entertain. After going down a quick little TikTok spiral, I decided to add an interactive element to their playroom that would (hopefully) make it more inviting with the viral Govee Curtain Lights 2. After a few weeks of putting them to the test, here’s why I think Govee Curtain Lights 2 are the perfect low-lift upgrade for our playroom:
Transforms our space completely with minimal effort
When I informed my husband of this latest home improvement project, he was initially skeptical and replied, “So, how long is this going to take me to install?” He’s used to my random (albeit genius) ideas and is generally eager to be the muscle for the project, but I think the electrical aspect seemed more intimidating than usual. Well turns out he was worried for nothing because Govee thought of everything when they designed their new Curtain Lights 2.
Our box arrived with one set of curtain lights, a power adapter, a control box, plastic straps to help avoid tangling, and 12 hooks with waterproof adhesive backing (since the lights can be used outdoors, too). It really was as easy as sticking each hook on our blinds and threading the lights through. It was genuinely the fastest I’ve ever seen him hang anything up, and he didn’t even need his ladder.
Once the lights were installed, we downloaded the Govee app and connected the light’s control box to our devices via Bluetooth. In less than five minutes, we were playing with the hundreds of different light features as if we were the kids. Instantly, the playroom was transformed by vivid animations. From colorful patterns to nature scenes to DIY art displays, the lights gave the room a completely different ambiance that we knew our kids were going to lose their minds over. Spoiler: They totally did.
Provides more opportunities to make ordinary days magical
In total honesty, the magical moments of parenthood can get lost in the mundane brought by our daily routines. It’s too easy to forget that our day-to-day comprises our kids’ entire childhoods. But when you’re an exhausted parent overwhelmed by life’s constant demands—work duties, after-school activities, yet another classmate’s birthday party—where do you find the time to create those magical moments? I know many parents share this sentiment, and while there’s no fix-all, the opportunity for more magical moments is what I love the most about this new playroom upgrade.
With just the touch of a button, our Curtain Lights 2 transport us to galaxies far far away, a deserted island with buried treasure, or an enchanted fairy forest. The beautiful displays inspire us to invent new worlds for the kids, which results in new core memories, too. And on the days we’re too drained for imaginative play, we let them draw in the Govee app’s DIY feature so they can watch their creations come to life. The app even lets you upload photos and GIFs, so we’ve displayed their favorite cartoon characters or pictures of family members. It also has a music feature that picks up sound from your device, which causes the music-sensitive lighting to move along with the beat. There are countless ways to customize this lighting system, and my kids have thoroughly enjoyed using their imaginations to make their playroom feel otherworldly.
Combines aesthetics with multifunctional practicality
On top of transforming a room’s ambiance with gorgeous displays, the Govee Curtain Lights 2 are conveniently multifunctional by enhancing outdoor spaces as well. Since the lights are waterproof, they can be installed on a garden patio, garage door, or the side of your house. With how easy these were to install, we’re considering hanging up more on the outside of the house for the holidays instead of adding lights to our roof. Regardless, the lights currently in our playroom can be seen from the street, so displaying one of the dozens of holiday-themed scenes at night will still be a fun (and zero-effort) way to tap into the holiday spirit.
For added convenience, Curtain Lights 2 is compatible with Google Home, Amazon Alex, and Apple HomeKit and supports voice control via Alexa and Google Assistant (our 4-year-old discovered this recently and has gotten creative with his Alexa requests, lol). They also seamlessly sync with other Govee products, including the TV Backlight 3 Lite and the Permanent Outdoor Lights 2, for an even more special lighting experience.
All in all, I’m beyond glad we added the Govee Curtain Lights 2 to our playroom. Not only did they upgrade the entire space but our quality time as a family, too. That alone makes this lighting system absolutely worthwhile.
