The binge-worthy show, Nobody Wants This, Season 2, starring Kristen Bell and Adam Brody, debuted on October 23. As someone who had this date noted on the family calendar since it was announced, it’s not hard to believe that I finished the entire season within a day. And while I was most excited to pick right back up on the relationship between Joanne and the “Hot Rabbi,” I found myself relatably drawn—and cackling—to the sister-and-sibling-dynamic between Joanne and Morgan.
The pair reminded me of my sister and me. Their unhinged sisterly banter shows the unfiltered relationship that sisters may have. If you have a sister, sisters, or daughters, you know there’s something to say about their sisterhood bond. I’m sharing why I’ve been able to weather any storm because of my own sister, and how the sisters in Nobody Wants This, played by Kristen Bell and Justine Lupe, are (comedically) the perfect example of why.
Editor’s Note: Light spoilers from Season 2 of ‘Nobody Wants This’ ahead.
A sister will always tell you the truth
In my experience, whether I’ve liked it or not, my sister has always been able to tell me her thoughts—good or bad—on decisions I’ve made in life. I may not initially receive it well at times. However, I know she’s always looking out for my best interest. In so many instances throughout Season 2 of Nobody Wants This, sisters Joanne and Morgan truthfully make one another analyze any life-decision, and it’s always for the best.
In reality, it may not always play out like when Morgan hilariously catches Joanne in the outdoor sauna, privately consulting her parents’ thoughts on Morgan’s decision to date her therapist. And while I can only speak for myself in saying that I would never try on a wedding dress while my sister was shopping for her own, I can state that no matter how upset we get with each other, we always say ‘sorry’ and make up.

The sisters in ‘Nobody Wants This’ show up for each other
When my sister calls me at any point of the day, for the most part, I pick up instantly. I’d describe it as a treat or the mid-day break I so desperately need sometimes. In both seasons of Nobody Wants This, whenever Joanne calls Morgan, she automatically answers. From Joanne asking her sister to be there in an instant during a Matzah Ballers’ basketball game in Season 1 to calling her in the middle of a Jewish baby-naming ceremony to crash a party, sisters show up whenever you need them. I know that if my sister called me asking to confront the person who cut her American Girl doll‘s hair growing up, like in Episode 5, I’d be there ASAP.
It can be hard to move on without them
In a recent interview on Oprah Daily with Justine Lupe and Gayle King, Lupe was asked about her thoughts on her character’s decision to date her therapist. Lupe responded with, “I think Morgan is processing the fact that her sister, who is also one of the great loves of her life, is moving on into a romantic relationship with Noah, and she doesn’t really know how to process it. She doesn’t have the tools to deal with the loss.”
As someone who had the naive realization she would never live with her sister again after her older sister announced she’d be moving in with a boy (AKA my brother-in-law) after college, I can understand how Morgan can be mourning ‘the loss’ of her sister. But like Morgan says in Season 2, she’s truly happy for Joanne and the relationship she has with Noah. And I believe that.
A strong relationship between sisters may take time
The word “hate” is a strong word, but my sister and I didn’t always have this strong bond like we do today. We weren’t the best of friends growing up, and like any relationship, it took time. I think my parents back then would have been shocked to believe that we would be best friends one day. Also, maybe they knew it would flourish at some point. I’m not sure what the sisters in Nobody Wants This were like when they were younger, but I can see them arguing as kids, just like they do as adults.
Having a sister is like having a built-in best friend
If you have daughters, I can’t promise that they’ll have a Joanne-Morgan relationship, but I can confidently say that it may take some time to get there. Famously, there are great examples of sisters who are best friends. To name a few, there’s Dakota and Elle Fanning; Beyoncé and Solange Knowles; Ilona, Olivia, and Adrianna Maher; Serena and Venus Williams; and the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, and her sister, Pippa.
In a Vanity Fair interview, I believe Dakota Fanning said it best when describing what having a sister is like. She stated, “If everyone in my life stopped talking to me, I’d be devastated. But if I still had my sister, I’d be like, ‘Well, I have her.’” And I think Joanne and Morgan would agree.
