There are two ways that you might view working out: you love it and it’s the “me” time you look forward to, or you hate it and force yourself to do it while counting down the minutes until it’s over.
If working out was one of your New Year’s resolutions or you’re trying to get back into a fitness routine after baby, we want to help you view fitness as something you crave, not something you dread. It’s much easier to stick with a routine if you actually enjoy it.
There are only so many hours in the day. And on top of that, there are very few hours that we as moms get to ourselves. It’s important to spend this time wisely. If you want to prioritize fitness, that’s a great goal. And while you’re at it, you might as well like it.
Do you currently fall into the “hate” category? Not to worry, all is not lost. You may need to approach fitness in a new way. Hopefully with the right workout and mindset, your outlook will change.
Today, we’re sharing tips to help you find a workout you will actually look forward to.
1. Get creative and shop around
If you don’t like a particular workout, that’s OK! Not everything is for everyone. Fortunately, thanks to the booming fitness industry, there are endless workout options. There are your standard options like running, spin class, and yoga. Then, there’s also swimming, rowing, pilates, dance class, and boxing — the list goes on. Keep in mind that things outside of the gym or boutique studio are still workouts — long walks, hiking, and biking. Continue to explore until you find a format that works for you.
And maybe the right fit is always keeping it fresh. If you want to endlessly try new classes, that’s also an option. ClassPass is a good way to try a variety of classes and keep things interesting. If you don’t have a lot of workout studios in your area, there are plenty of online workout options. A few good ones to check out are The Bloom Method and Expecting and Empowered (for pre- and postnatal workouts), Obe, Aaptiv, Peloton, and Daily Burn.
2. Make it a friend date
We mentioned that time is precious, especially with kids in the picture. Make your workout also count as time to catch up with friends. Schedule a weekly walking date or try a new class together. Working out with a buddy makes it a fun experience and also helps with accountability. Take turns picking out a new class or walk/run route.
3. Seek out baby and me options
If you’re home with a little one, find a class that includes them in the workout. Entertaining a kid all day can be exhausting, so at least during this hour, they’ll be occupied. Search for baby and me workout classes in your area. They are a great option if you’re still recovering from pregnancy and childbirth. Instructors and fellow students will be understanding if you need to take a break to nurse or change a dirty diaper. These classes are also an excellent way to connect with other moms.
4. Time it right
Do you hate working out because you’re doing it at 5am and you’re not a morning person? It certainly isn’t easy to find time to workout. Early mornings, evenings, nap time — play around with your schedule and figure out when you have energy and feel your best.
If you need help to make your workout happen, ask for it. Work with your partner to align your schedules, see if family can watch the kids, or even set up a babysitting exchange with a mom friend. You can take turns hanging with the kids while the other one works out. Get creative so you can fit your workout in at a time that is appealing to you.
5. Don’t force it
When trying a new workout, it can take time to ease into and really enjoy it. If you’ve given yourself that grace period and are still not into, don’t force it. Think about why you want to work out (to feel good, for your health, for more energy, for me time, etc.) and find something that aligns with those goals.
6. Avoid burn out
Maybe you did find a workout you loved, but lately, you’re just not feeling it. This is super common, especially if you’ve been at it for a while. Check in with yourself and know when it’s time to switch things up. If you feel yourself getting burned out and aren’t as motivated as you once were, go back to trying new options. Sometimes, you need a break from routine; a new challenge will help you to get re-excited about fitness.
