It’s a great time to be a millennial. Mainstream pop culture is catering to so many of our preferences. American Girl finally dropped Halloween costumes, Adam Brody and Joshua Jackson are back on our screens, Kendrick Lamar wore our favorite flared jeans at the Super Bowl… the list goes on. One millennial revival I’m thrilled to experience in 2025 is the sequel to Lindsay Lohan and Jamie Lee Curtis’ 2003 hit, Freaky Friday, especially after seeing the just-released movie trailer for Freakier Friday.

Movie remakes and sequels are plentiful, but not everything hits, of course. The Mean Girls Musical kind of flopped and Chad Michael Murray’s (AKA Jake from Freaky Friday) Netflix movie, The Merry Gentlemen, was mocked on social media. But now that the trailer for Freakier Friday is here, I know one thing for sure—I cannot wait to watch the movie with my kids.

“It had been such a labor of love to make it happen,” said Lindsay Lohan in an interview with Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show, also mentioning she and Curtis were just so happy and smiling through the film’s first table read. This tidbit made me grin ear-to-ear picturing the two icons as excited about making this long-awaited film as fans are about seeing it. Here’s why I’ll be seeing Freakier Friday in theaters this summer with my two kids, plus what we know about the movie, so far.

When is Freakier Friday Coming Out?

Disney announced the release date for the film earlier this year. Freakier Friday comes to theaters on August 8, 2025.

What is Freakier Friday About?

We don’t know much about the plot yet, except that the swap happens at a similar life moment when families are about to merge. Anna has a daughter and soon-to-be stepdaughter.

If the trailer is any indication, the initial swap moments will again be hilarious (i.e. Jamie Lee Curtis comparing her skin to a “Birkin Bag that’s been left out in the sun to rot.”) And in interview with IMDB, Curtis said everything about the movie will be “funnier” and “freakier”—and there will be “more swapping.” From the teaser, it looks like four swaps happen between three generations! We’ll also be treated to a bachelorette party, surfing, and pickleball. Additionally, Lindsay Lohan confirmed a reunion of her high school band, Pink Slip, which I cannot wait to see.

Who From the Original Freaky Friday Cast is in the Sequel?

Nearly all the standout characters from the original movie are coming back for the sequel. Obviously, Jamie Lee Curtis is reprising her role as mom, Tess and Lindsay Lohan, is reprising her role as Anna Coleman. Here are the other original characters coming back for Freakier Friday, according to IMDB:

  • Mark Harmon as Ryan
  • Chad Michael Murray as Jake
  • Stephen Tobolowsky as Mr. Bates
  • Rosalind Chao as Pei Pei
  • Lucille Soong as Pei Pei’s Mom

The band Pink Slip is also back with original members:

  • Christina Vidal as Maddie
  • Haley Hudson as Peg

New cast members include:

  • Julia Butters is playing Anna’s daughter Harper
  • Sophia Hammons is playing Anna’s soon-to-be stepdaughter

Little brother Harry, played by Ryan Malgarini, will not be in Freakier Friday. And actor Harold Gould, who played Grandpa, passed away in 2010.

Is Freakier Friday OK for Kids?

The original movie is rated PG and the Common Sense Media recommends it for kids ages 8+ and I’d agree. I recently rewatched Freaky Friday for the first time as a mom—and with my 11-year-old daughter. She loved it, aside from the fact that she thought the moments between Anna (in Tess’s body) and Jake were “so cringe and awkward.” It sparked so many fun conversations about what we would do in each other’s body.

Freakier Friday is not yet rated, but I do plan on taking both my kids, now 9 and 12 to see it in the theater this summer. I love that the main concept in both movies is empathy—the literal living in someone’s shoes. It’s a takeaway I think is valuable for my kids to see (even if I’m also watching the movie for a glimpse of Chad Michael Murray on a motorcycle again.)

While I plan on making a Freakier Friday viewing a mother-daughter activity with my kids, I wouldn’t mind watching it with the gal pals I originally saw Freaky Friday with in 2003. Maybe when the movie comes to streaming, I’ll invite them over for a 2003-themed girls’ night in.
