I’ve become that mom on the walking trail—the one wearing a weighted vest, AirPods in, fully immersed in my audiobook while power-walking like I’m training for an upcoming marathon. (I’m not.)

Like so many trends, this one started on TikTok. My FYP (for you page) began serving endless videos of women swearing that wearing a weighted vest (currently on sale for Black Friday)on their daily walks changed everything: boosted energy, improved posture, and made their workouts more efficient. Then a friend insisted that her weighted vest walks helped give her abs definition—and I didn’t need to hear anything else. I ordered one that night.

Just last week, while I was doing my usual routine, a mom stopped me and asked about my vest, noting she’d seen it all over her socials. I shared not only the link to my weighted vest but also why I think we should all get one. Here is why I think a weighted vest is worth the hype.

Why add a weighted vest to your hot mom walk

In this season of life, walking is the one form of movement that fits my schedule. Sometimes I take a quick walk right before school pickup; other times, I’m doing laps while my older son is at soccer practice. Are we even millennial moms if we’re not constantly multitasking? Did I mention I’m also usually listening to an audiobook

But I wanted something that made those 40 minutes feel a little more impactful. A weighted vest is an effective, practical, and affordable way to elevate a mom-life workout. Plus, not only does a weighted vest make a simple brisk walk more challenging, but I also found other surprising benefits.

Benefits I noticed from my weighted vest walks

Some claim wearing a weighted vest for women may help build bone density. In a 5-year study of postmenopausal women found that a long-term program of weighted vest use plus jumping exercises prevented significant hip bone loss. Other claims, such as improvements in posture and greater calorie burn, have come out inconclusive. While there aren’t enough scientifically proven benefits to wearing a weighted vest, I found some personal enjoyment in adding one to my routine.

1. My walks became more effective immediately

Adding the 12 pounds of weight was quite a challenge the first week or so, but now my walks have become a lot more manageable. I feel sore (in a good way), after just a simple walk.

2. Posture improvements I didn’t expect

The weighted vest encouraged better alignment without me having to think about it. I noticed that I walk with a lot better posture, and sometimes that carries through to the rest of the day. I also carry a lot of stress in my shoulders, and the weighted vest helps alleviate that tension.

3. Real-life strength gains

Did a weighted vest suddenly give me abs definition? No. But, I do notice that walking with one engages my core as if I’m on a pilates reformer. I also feel lots of strength building in my inner-thighs. So while there are no overnight changes to report, I do feel the additional weight is making me feel stronger and helps build muscle over time.

4. A surprising mood boost

The weight feels grounding in a way that’s similar to a weighted blanket. I didn’t expect this, but it made my walks more calming and helped reduce that overwhelmed, “I need five minutes to myself” feeling. I noticed that I  leave the trail refreshed and energized.

Most trends don’t stick for me. But this one works because it fits into real mom life. There’s no extra step, no scheduling, no overhaul. You’re not carving out gym time—you’re just enhancing something you’re already doing. I only wish I had a weighted vest during all my stroller-walking years—it would have been such a great addition to my postpartum journey.

Tips if you want to try a weighted vest

  • Start light (8-12 lbs) and increase gradually, or not. I noticed that I really built up momentum and can walk quite swiftly with the additional weight.
  • Begin with short wear times—20 minutes is a great start.
  • Stick to walking —running with a vest isn’t ideal for most beginners.
  • Listen to your body—you should feel challenged, not strained.

A weighted vest didn’t transform my fitness overnight—but it did transform how I feel on my walks. I feel stronger. More confident. More connected to my body in a season when it can be easy to feel disconnected.

I love and own the ZELUS weighted vest. As I mentioned, I started with 12lbs and that has been plenty challenging, even months later. My husband also purchased his own and started at 25lbs. However, you could also buy a weighted vest that allows you to adjust the weight as you get more comfortable.

What to look for when shopping for a weighted vest for women

  • Comfort-first design: Most of these vests use soft materials (like neoprene) or ergonomic fits, so you won’t feel like you’re wearing body armor on your walk.
  • Adjustable or fixed options: If you’re just starting, a light adjustable vest (like this one) lets you scale up slowly.
  • Safety features: Reflective strips on some vests improve visibility if you’re walking early AM or dusk.
