As a mom of two boys—ages 5 and 9—you’d think I’d have this whole “dressing boys” thing down by now. But every season, I find myself staring at the few store racks reserved for boys (or scrolling online) wondering: why is it so hard to find cute boys’ clothes?

Every time I shop, it feels like the boys’ section is an afterthought—half the size of the girls’, and full of the same five things: navy, gray, camo, dinosaurs, and trucks. Don’t get me wrong, my kids have had their fair share of dino tees and excavator sweatshirts over the years, but at some point, they outgrow the theme—and so do we.

I want more options for my boys, more colors, and a better fit—why are these things reserved for girls, not a 5-year-old who has boldly declared his favorite color is pink (this week)?

So after far too many late-night online shopping sessions, I finally found a few brands and fashion pieces that make getting boys dressed a little more fun. Still comfortable, fabrics they can move in, but just a little more stylish than the typical bland options.

Why does dressing boys feel so limiting?

  • Limited variety: The boys’ section is often half the size of the girls’—and it shows.
  • Color gap: While girls’ clothing racks are bursting with color, boys’ clothes tend to stick to neutrals, camo, and sports logos.
  • Fit and comfort: Boys’ clothes are often baggy, making it tricky to find pieces that feel both stylish and comfortable.

What I look for when shopping for boys’ clothes

Over the years, I’ve learned what works—and what’s worth skipping. Here’s my checklist when I shop for my boys:

  • Play-friendly, but well tailored: I need pieces that can handle the playground but still look nice for school.
  • Soft fabrics: If it’s stiff, scratchy, or fussy, they won’t wear it. Period.
  • Color with personality: Neutrals are great, but I love earthy tones like rust, sage, and plum that feel more fun than another gray hoodie. My boys also like bright colors, so we lean into that.

Where I shop for boy closet staples

In general, I keep my boys’ closets simple, almost like a capsule wardrobe, but for kids. I have a few styles of pants and joggers that I repurchase yearly, like these Old Navy joggers that are buttery soft and tapered. They love them because they’re comfortable and soft, and I love them because of the great fit and style. Other go-to stores and brands include H&M, Zara, Abercrombie Kids, and Nike. What seals the deal for me when it comes to where I shop mostly involves whether or not a store or brand has durable clothes or are easily replaceable (I know I’m not the only one with boys who have come home with torn-up shoes and articles of clothing). Another factor that comes into play is whether or not my boys will actually wear the pieces I choose, too. They’re finally at the age where they want a say in their style, and I want them to like what they wear and feel good with what they have in their closets.

My top picks for boys’ clothes to add to their closet

Joggers

My boys live in joggers. They’re comfy, stylish, and easily pair with anything. Plus, stocking up on the same pair in different colors is always a win in my house.

Denim

For denim, H&M is my go-to, followed by Zara. Both stores always have a variety of styles and colors, as well as consistent sizing—plus most kids’ denim have adjustable inner elastic waistbands for a better fit. Both offer trendy denim options, too.

T-shirts

Maybe it’s because we live on the West Coast, but I always gravitate towards bright surfer-style tees for my kids. This is when they can show a little personality and flair, in bright, fun colors. Even in the wintertime, having a handful of tees to layer throughout the season is essential once they shed off all their winter gear.

Accessories

And we can’t forget about the accessories. Having fun socks is something my boys love, like Baseball Lifestyle’s 101 socks that all the boys, from little kids to teens, rave about. Additionally, a simple beanie that goes with everything is always nice to have in the colder months. Lastly, having durable shoes is so important. From casual wear to boots that can be paired with sweats or a nice pair of holiday trousers, you can’t go wrong with any of these options.
