A few weeks before our first kid was born, we started childproofing the house. At the time, the process seemed pretty simple. Socket guards, locking up any lower cabinets, putting soft guards on any sharp edges, and baby gates. The process was pretty low-stress because we knew we were months away from a mobile child. And we couldn’t imagine the actual reality setting in of what our daughter could possibly get into.

Well, as all parents do, we went through a pretty rude awakening during the toddler phase. Suddenly, you go from walking, to running, to jumping off of everything in existence. The bookshelf? The hardwood floor? That coffee table we thought we could push to the side? How naive we were to think that everything wouldn’t cause some kind of stress and threat of injury. That’s why I was so excited to see a new innovative launch from House of Noa, with their line of soft furniture.

House of Noa Soft Furniture Overview

House of Noa is a brand that has become synonymous with play mats, tumbling mats, standing mats, and bath mats. They are all made for soft play spaces with beautiful prints that don’t scream “kid.” While many of their products are made with children in mind, their luxurious design and elevated prints make most products easy to transition from baby life straight into childhood.

The most recent launch from the brand is their soft furniture collection, which includes modular play couches, ottomans, and more. They can be mixed and matched both to be played with but also for daily life for the whole family. You can purchase The Seat (and combine two to make a couch), The Ottoman, The Coffee Table, and throw pillows to customize any space. Whether it’s for a nursery, play space, or even for your living room, the soft furniture is lightweight and practical with patterned fabrics in a variety of neutral tones and fun colors.

Honest Review: House of Noa Play Couch

Despite being one of those parents who thought they could get away with a house that didn’t look like it was overrun by children… well, that didn’t happen. Sure, our pre-kid furniture may still exist, but it does so within a room that’s exploding with toddler paraphernalia. So I am a complete sucker when it comes to anything that is both kid-friendly and functional. Bonus points if it looks beautiful, too.

For that, House of Noa hit it out of the park. We have their Seat and Armrests in Harlan Ivory and Sand. It’s the perfect neutral stripe pattern that we can easily move from room to room. The fabric is a soft textured linen weave, put over a foam interior that you can easily fold up and use handles to carry. While it is easy enough to move from room to room, the foam is also very sturdy, making for a cozy seat (or, let’s be honest, landing pad) for my kid.

While the fabric is machine-washable, you can also buy a separate waterproof cover that protects the interior. This is something I highly recommend doing.

After testing it out, my daughter has become a big fan of the Seat, and I’ve really enjoyed its versatility as well. While we just have the one (you can purchase more to make it a couch), the size is pretty substantial. Folded in half, it has dimensions of 35″ L x 35″ W x 11″ H. We’ve set it up as a seat with the armrests for a place to snuggle up on movie nights. And, my daughter is currently loving it unfolded to use as a bed at night. (At almost three, she currently refuses to sleep in her bed, which sits idly by as a mere decoration.)

House of Noa Play Couch vs. Nugget

The real question I know will be on many parents’ minds is how the new soft furniture collection compares to the much-loved Nugget, which touts itself as the original play couch. Well, we now have both, so I have my own thoughts on where the similarities and differences come in.

The biggest difference, of course, is the variety. While Nugget offers multiple products (including The Chunk), its flagship offering is the play couch. The Nugget comes with four foam pieces—a base, cushion, and two triangle pillows—that have endless configurations. House of Noa’s soft furniture collection offers a wide variety, with a smaller Seat (that you’d need two of to make a couch), the Armrests, an Ottoman, and a Coffee Table.

But, simply comparing the House of Noa Seat versus the Nugget couch, there are key differences if you’re looking to buy one or the other. The House of Noa collection feels like a more luxurious product, which can be used for both play and as a piece of furniture. A big part of that is the fabric differences, with House of Noa’s using a linen weave that feels like our couch, versus the microsuede of the Nugget.

Cost is another factor to consider. The smaller Seat is $249, with the throw pillows and Armrests available separately. The Nugget is larger, with a length (unfolded) of 66″ and a height of 22.5″ with the triangles on top. It also comes with four pieces for $274, less than a $30 difference from the one-piece Seat.

The Final Verdict

While both brands offer a waterproof covering to protect from damage, I definitely feel like the Nugget provides a more “playable” addition to the house versus House of Noa’s, which definitely feels more like furniture. Both are transportable and can be folded into various shapes. House of Noa’s Seat is something we plan to use in our daughter’s room or a nursery for our second child for them to use for reading time. The Nugget feels like it can be thrown around and played with in a playroom or living room.

Ultimately, which works best for you is going to depend on your needs. If you want a play couch that your kids can jump on, use as a tent, or put in any type of configuration, you’re likely to find that with the Nugget or a comparable alternative. But, if you want slightly more upscale piece of play furniture with an emphasis on furniture, the Seat from House of Noa will fit the bill.
