The One Formula That Helped My Baby’s Sensitive Tummy

When my daughter was born, I had every intention of breastfeeding. It was what my mom did, what my sister did, what all my friends did. But despite my best efforts, nursing—and then pumping—didn’t work out for me. My baby wasn’t happy, I wasn’t happy. Even my husband wasn’t happy (turns out the happy wife, happy life adage is true). And so one day, with the guidance of our pediatrician, we entered the formula aisle at Target, with the mantra “fed is best” echoing in my head.

Because our baby didn’t have any known allergies or medical issues, we had the pick of the milk. So we initially tried a couple based on price and recommendations from friends. However, Addison spit up more than I thought was normal for a newborn and was very gassy, no matter which brand or type we gave her. Plus, I was a little perturbed at the ingredient lists of some of the biggest brands of formula—did I really want my baby’s primary source of nutrition to be a product where one of the top ingredients is corn syrup?! And yet I soldiered on, determined to find a formula that pleased me and my baby.

Then one day, with crusted spit up on my shirt and a belching baby on my hip, I found it. As I online shopped, there it was in all of its aesthetically-pleasing, Instagram-famous glory: a can of Bobbie Organic Gentle formula. I had heard good things so I ordered it—and it was one of the best decisions I’ve made as a new mom (second only to letting other people help with the baby instead of trying to do it all myself). My little one is happier, I’m happier, and yes, my husband is happier, too.

Making the Switch to Bobbie Organic Gentle

Google “how to switch baby formula” and you’d think changing formula brands is as scary as trying to make it through the day without a cup of coffee with a newborn. While that may be the case for some babies—and some brands—it wasn’t the case for us as we transitioned to Bobbie Gentle. In fact, we bravely went cold turkey, and it worked surprisingly well.

One day she was downing 24 ounces of her previous formula, the next she was downing 24 ounces of Bobbie Gentle. I don’t think she even noticed that we had changed anything (aside from a happier tummy)—that’s how easy it can be to introduce Bobbie Gentle to a baby.

She was just as interested in her bottle, if not more so. While I can’t read my baby’s brain, I like to think she was more drawn to Bobbie because it doesn’t have “that” formula smell (any formula mom out there knows what I’m talking about!). Bobbie Gentle might not smell like a Starbucks caramel macchiato but it smells a little better than other formula brands, and that makes it more attractive to little mouths, in my opinion.

What I Like About Bobbie Organic Gentle

As the name suggests, Bobbie Gentle is, well, gentle on my baby’s stomach. Unlike other formulas that rely heavily on corn syrup solids, sucrose, and rice, Bobbie Gentle is made with 100% lactose carbohydrates and is the first USDA and EU organic tolerance formula. But what really sets it apart is that it uses partially hydrolyzed proteins, which are essentially proteins that have already been broken down. That makes it easy for little ones—like Addison—to digest. I noticed her spit ups significantly decreased immediately after switching to Bobbie Gentle and, at the risk of being TMI, had much less smelly farts and fewer burps.

Just as important, Bobbie is easy to prepare. While other brands clumped up at the bottom of a bottle or had an off-putting consistency, Bobbie blends well with just a few quick shakes of a bottle. It may not seem like that big of a deal but trust me it is when you have a 5-month-old screaming at top volume because she’s hungry and needs her milk NOW.

I also like that Bobbie is the only mom-founded and mom-led infant formula company in the United States. The world would be a better place if there were more moms supporting moms, so I’m happy to be a small part in that.

My Final Thoughts

Here’s the thing: Formula is very personal. Different babies and different mamas like (and need) different things. I’m not a doctor but I do know that Bobbie Organic Gentle has been by far the best baby formula our family has tried—and we’ve used almost every big-name brand there is. Our baby digests it well, it’s palm oil free and made with quality organic ingredients, and it’s by moms for moms. Plus, it’s modeled after breast milk, which is important to us.

Plus Bobbie offers a subscription service, so you can have your formula automatically delivered when you need it right to your doorstep. That’s a serious game-changer when you’re already trying to juggle feeding, napping, pooping, and tummy time schedules. Priced at $28 per can for 14.1 oz with a monthly subscription, it’s well worth the cost for our family. At the risk of sounding super cheesy, having a happy and healthy baby is pretty priceless.
