Each year, the Social Security Administration puts out an exciting list of the top baby names of the previous year. They highlight the top baby names for boys and girls and round up the 1,000 most popular of each. The list is always interesting to see as it’s a glimpse into trends, traditions, and inspirations people are drawn to when choosing a name for their baby. We’re also gifted with another interesting insight into baby name trends from the previous year: the most popular baby names by state based on data from the SSA’s Social Security card applications.

Not only is it exciting to see which baby names are popular near you, but it’s also interesting to see how the trends show up in different parts of the country. For example, West Virginia has some of the most unique names in the states’ most popular picks, including Oaklynn, Everleigh, and Wrenley for girls and Maverick, River, and Walker for boys. While many other states stick pretty close to the national top five names.

Keep scrolling for U.S. naming trends across girls, boys, and a breakdown of the 10 most popular names by state in 2024, along with some more notable names trending in certain areas.

The Top Baby Name in Every State

While Olivia and Liam reigned as the most popular baby names nationally in the U.S., that didn’t mean they made the top list in every state. Check out the most popular boy and most popular girl names in every state below:

Boy Baby Name Trends by State

Boy names often don’t vary as much as girl names, but 2024 did see some new names added to the lists. For example, the Spanish Santiago and Greek Sebastian were both in the top five in California and Texas in 2023, but came to Nevada’s top five this year. The nature-inspired name Brooks made the top five most popular baby names in only one state: North Dakota (but was sixth on the list in South Dakota.) And you might find a few little cowboys in Arkansas and Wyoming, where Stetson made the top 20 most popular baby boy names along with Western-inspired Waylon.

The pretty Irish name Maeve popped into the top 20 most popular girl names in some Northeastern states, including Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire. Esther moved into the top 20 in New York and New Jersey, perhaps inspired by Jackie Tohn’s strong character in the new Netflix favorite, Nobody Wants This. A state’s environment may also play a role in choosing a baby girl name for some parents. In pine-filled Alaska and Oregon, for example, nature-inspired Juniper is a top 20 baby girl name.
