Sweet Oz! As Wicked fans, my son and I were defying gravity this morning—finally, the first official full trailer for Wicked: For Good is out. Before we started our day, I sat down with my 8-year-old son to watch the trailer to the much-anticipated Wicked sequel. The video was released on Wednesday, June 4, but we didn’t catch it until Thursday morning (turning off my phone and going to bed early is one of my favorite hobbies). And, by Oz, it did not disappoint. At over two minutes long, the trailer answered some questions—but also brought up many questions, particularly for my 8-year-old Wicked superfan.

In case you are trapped under the yellow brick road, Wicked: For Good is the follow up to last year’s mega-hit Wicked. Both movies are directed by John Chu and penned by screenwriter Winnie Holzman, whom fellow elder-millennials will recognize her as the creator of My So Called Life. Holzman also authored the original musical stage play. Obviously, Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Michele Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum are back for the second film, too.
After watching the trailer many, many, many times, the video sparked some deliberation from us. Here are some of the things we noticed and some of the questions that came up from the Wicked: For Good trailer:
Things My 8-Year-Old Noticed and Wondered About in the Wicked: For Good Trailer
Are the flying monkeys on Elphaba’s side?
As any good Wizard of Oz fan knows, the Wicked Witch of the West’s trusty sidekicks are her flying monkeys. In the first Wicked movie, we see why. But in the opening lines of the Wicked: For Good trailer, Glinda tells Elphaba to be quick before the monkeys find her. That had my little guy wondering if there was more than one monkey army.
Where are Nessarose and Boq?
We had to watch the new trailer many times to see if we spotted Nessarose. I could have sworn I saw her and Boq when I first watched the trailer, but after multiple viewings we didn’t see either of them. This had my son wondering, “what happened to Nessa after her father died in the first movie?” Pretty sure we all know the answer to that one.
Elphaba kept casting spells from the Grimmerie
My son loved that the trailer opens with Elphaba chanting more spells from the Grimmerie. This can only mean she’s sharpening her powers!
There were so many Wizard of Oz references
In the original stage play, we don’t actually get to see Dorothy. She is referenced often, but we never actually see her. In the new Wicked: For Good trailer, we finally catch a glimpse of the girl from Kansas and her friends. We also see a vaguely sepia-toned tornado forming (maybe the work of Madame Morrible?). There’s, of course, a pretty great nod to the original movie with the last line of the trailer: “I’m off to see the Wizard,” Elphaba says. We can’t wait to see what other sneaky easter eggs are hidden in the new movie.
Does the Wicked Witch die?
This was my son’s biggest question after the trailer. He’s seen The Wizard of Oz and the first Wicked movie, but never the Wicked musical on Broadway. So does Elphaba actually melt away in the end? We’ll have to watch and see.
Is Fiyero actually a good guy?
Not only is Fiyero my favorite Wicked character, but it’s pretty impossible to not be head-over-heels in love with Jonathan Bailey. Watching the trailer, though, we wondered if Fiyero is team Elphie or team Wizard? Either way, he looks really good in that uniform.
Elphaba shatters Glinda’s window, again
I love that my son picked up on this detail from the opening of the trailer. “In the first Wicked, I noticed that Elphaba shatters Glinda’s window,” he said. “In the trailer, I noticed she does it again and we finally see her again and Glinda knows she’s there.”
When Does Wicked: For Good Come to Theaters?
Is Thanksgiving the right time to drop the best movies? Don’t make me laugh! Late November is the ideal time for a movie this big to hit the big screen. In 2024, Wicked came to movie screens on November 22, 2024. Wicked: For Good is set to be released on Friday, November 21, 2025. Aiming to pick up that holiday movie traffic and set the same box office gold as the original. Guess we know where we’ll be that weekend.
