I bought my tickets to Wicked: For Good early to ensure a seat on opening night, November 21, 2025. As my daughter, niece, mom, and sister-in-law settled into our seats for a multi-generational girls’ night to see Wicked: For Good in 3D (highly recommended, by the way), we were among the throngs of fans eager to return to Oz for the Wicked part two movie sequel. In fact, according to box office numbers, the opening weekend of Wicked: For Good was a marked success, earning $150 million domestically, making it the second-largest movie opening of the year.

So, what age is appropriate for kids to see Wicked: For Good? The answer is, of course, it depends. You’ll want to consider your child’s maturity, how long they can sit still (Wicked: For Good is shorter, but still runs over two hours), and whether they liked the first movie. Our crew loved Wicked: For Good, but not without some caveats. Here’s what parents will want to know when considering whether Wicked: For Good is OK for their kids.

Key takeaways:

  • Wicked: For Good debuted in theaters Friday, November 21, 2025, with advanced screenings in select theaters for Amazon Prime members.
  • The movie sequel continues the story of friends Glinda and Elphaba as they become Glinda the Good and The Wicked Witch of the West. The plot begins to intersect with the well-known story, The Wizard of Oz.
  • Wicked: For Goodis rated PG, for thematic and scary elements. Parents who’ve seen early screenings reference one suggestive scene during the song As Long As You’re Mine. Parents will need to decide if the film is appropriate for their kids.

What is Wicked: For Good about?

Both of director John Chu’s Wicked movies are film adaptations of the hit Broadway play, based on Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.

At the end of Wicked, we last left Elphaba Defying Gravity in an emotional final scene, leaving Glinda behind. In part two, the friends’ paths diverge. Glinda lives in a palace in Emerald City, implored by the Wizard and Madame Morrible to keep Ozians and Munchkins happy. Elphaba is in exile, hunted by Prince Fiyero, while trying to expose the truth about the Wizard and help the animals. We also see an evolution of Elphaba’s sister Nessarose and Boq’s relationship. And the story soon begins to overlap with the well-known Wizard of Oz tale with Dorothy, the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and Cowardly Lion.

As Elphaba is villainized by the Wizard, Madame Morrible, the Munchkins, and Ozians as The Wicked Witch of the West, Glinda must decide whether she truly is Glinda the Good.

Is Wicked: For Good OK for kids?

Many kids will be excited to see their favorite characters from Wicked back on movie screens. However, parents will want to know that Wicked: For Good gets a bit darker, with some more mature elements (including a love scene) and violence. Like the original Wicked movie, part two is rated PG for action/violence, some suggestive and thematic material. It also runs two hours and 17 minutes, which may feel long for younger viewers.

Glinda and Elphaba’s unlikely friendship remains the heart of the story in Wicked: For Good. And the sequel continues to explore powerful themes even younger kids will understand, like friendship, loyalty, standing up for what’s right, and staying true to yourself. But noticeably absent are the more fun and lighthearted songs like Popular and Dancing Through Life with colorful train rides through Emerald City. So little ones hoping for more of what they saw in the original Wicked movie might be disappointed.

Parents’ reviews after watching Wicked: For Good

Parents who were able to see early screenings of the movie have started to share their reviews. One mom, Alyssa Goldwater, shared why she will not be taking her 9-year-old daughter to see the movie after prescreening the film. In a video on Instagram, she describes the lengthy scene between Elphaba and Fiyero in the woods, which includes the removal of some clothing layers, kissing, and “breathiness.” It is decidedly much less subtle than the scene in the play (hello, shirtless Jonathan Bailey!), so if you’re concerned about a suggestive scene, it could be the time for a bathroom break as you start to hear the song, As Long As You’re Mine.

The Everymom editors and parents on The Everymom’s Instagram also shared some early reviews after seeing Wicked: For Good, and they are much more mixed than the original movie.

  • “I think it’s okay for kids to watch, but there’s a lot of dialogue and heavy themes. It’s not as ‘fun’ as the first one, even though glimmers of the themes are there,” wrote @ms_hummingbird42.
  • “I took my 8 year old son tonight & at no point did I question if he should be watching it. We both loved it as expected!” wrote @woltersjillian.
  • “I took my little one and she loved it. She’s 6.” wrote @ichaves25.
  • “My 9-year-old son’s immediate reaction was ‘that was terrible’ because it was sad, and the friends don’t get to see each other again,” shared Editor-in-Chief Roberta Correia. “The Fiyero reveal also might be confusing or scary for younger viewers.”
  • “My daughters really sensitive… and although she did make some comments because she was shocked at the characters, she didn’t find anything disturbing or sad, she loved it!” wrote @sabinec22.
  • “There was one bit that was sexual and heavily implied it but it kinda went over my daughter’s head 😅 She’s 8 and in her ‘eww, love’ phase so she turned around and buried herself in her seat anyway,” wrote @adrian_eason.

Despite the new tracks, I was most excited to hear Cynthia Erivo sing As Long As You’re Mine to People Magazine’s Sexiest Man Alive, Jonathan Bailey (Wicked: For Good is for the moms, too, after all!), even if my tween daughters would cringe at the love scene.

But while Wicked does include a love story, the most powerful love in the films might be more akin to the love seen in another kid favorite musical movie, Disney’s Frozen. Because, after seeing Wicked: For Good, the most memorable moment is when Glinda and Elphaba sing For Good. Don’t forget your tissues.
