The cozy winter months mean you can usually find me wearing sweatpants and loungewear in and out of the house. But when my social and holiday calendar calls for a day or night dressed up, I’ve found the next best thing that meets the criteria of comfy-chic. The *it* pants of the holiday season are a pair of wide-leg satin pants, and besides their breathable, buttery-soft lure, they pretty much go with anything. Plus, they can be deemed as loungewear, too (extra points for this factor).
During this time of year, especially, I’m looking for pants that I can easily slip into and won’t have me dying to get out of them the moment I put them on. I’m a true believer that fashion and beauty don’t have to cost me pain. Wearing a pair of satin pants is the simplest way to elevate any outfit. So, if you’re on the hunt for pants to wear to any and every holiday occasion, from Christmas outfits to a New Year’s party, you won’t be disappointed, because I’ve rounded up the best satin pants to add to your cart, and I’m sharing how to style them.

What I look for in a pair of satin pants
With wide-leg satin pants, the number one thing I look for is the drape. If they flow freely at the bottom and sway with me as I walk, then they’ve checked off the box for draping. The second thing I look for is whether or not the pants have an elastic waist and if they require a zipper to fasten them up. I’m a slip-on-pants-kind-of-girl (without the zipper), so this is personal preference. Personally, I love pants that have some stretch to them, too. Lastly—this isn’t a must, but definitely convenient—if they’re labeled as machine washable, then it’s a big selling point for me (one less trip to the dry cleaners).

The best colors for satin pants in the wintertime
For this time of year, keeping holiday color trends in mind will make it easier to narrow down the best color for a holiday occasion. When it comes to color, I would go for jewel tones, metallic, or classic neutrals. Jewel tones include colors like emerald green, sapphire blue, and ruby red. Aim for metallic colors like silver, gold, and champagne. For classic neutrals, pick colors like black, navy, and white for a minimalistic look that still looks elevated.
My favorite ways to style satin pants
What I love about wide-leg or straight-leg satin pants is that they look flattering on all body types. Its drapey yet stylish look automatically has me thinking, ‘I want to be wearing that,’ whenever I see satin pants on someone else. There are so many ways to wear them, so I’m sharing my top three ways on how to style them this season.
Go for a monochromatic look
My favorite way to style a pair of satin pants is to go for a monochromatic look by sticking to one color. After picking a color, aim for different shades of that same color for the top and bottom pieces. This gives a beautiful two-tone color contrast. It’s definitely not too matchy-matchy. Going for a monochromatic look is an easy color palette that looks so elegant, too.

Pair it with a tee or a simple sweater
Sometimes less is more. By picking a simple tee or sweater and pairing it with a wool coat or a jacket, you’ll get an instant, effortless look. Then I style with accessories, like a statement necklace, watch, bracelet, or purse.

Pairing satin pants with a buttoned blouse or cardigan is a classic and sophisticated look. This combo has elements of mom-approved work attire that can get you to your kid’s Christmas recital without an outfit change.

Shoes to wear with satin pants
Satin pants are so versatile that when I say they go with anything, they really do—especially with shoes. Pick a shoe based on the holiday affair. Are you going out for an extravagant night out? A night in with family and friends? If you’re opting for a casual look, you can’t go wrong with sneakers or even a pair of Rothy’s Casual Clogs or suede slip-ons. But for a more polished attire, my favorite shoes are a kitten heel, ballet flat, or pointed flat.
