Baby monitors were a genius invention. It’s a luxury I’m well aware of, especially since grandparents love to chime in with, “Back in my day, we didn’t have baby monitors
” I don’t take not having to army crawl across the floor to see if my baby is breathing for granted. Nowadays parents can check their baby monitor from their phones. Some monitors can display the temperature of the room, and others even communicate a baby’s oxygen levels. It’s a true nursery essential. However, there is one thing that doesn’t come on the warning label of a baby monitor. It’s “DANGER: Risk of your conversations (and you talking sh*t) being caught on the baby monitor.”

Baby monitors aren’t just monitoring babies. They have great sound quality, which means baby monitors can pick up your baby’s cry and anything you say, too. One mom shared her firsthand experience when she trash-talked her husband behind his back. Little did she know he was front and center for the convo—on the other side of the monitor—checking in on their baby. If you can relate, don’t worry, you’re not the only one talking sh*t about your significant other. With over 100 comments from other parents on their own baby monitor mishaps, read on to find out what happened between one Reddit user and her husband. Plus, leaked conversations shared by other parents.

Reddit mom caught talking sh*t on the baby monitor

Sometimes moms need a safe space to vent and who better to listen than a best friend? However, Reddit user @Legitimate_Guard7713 recently took to Reddit to write, “A couple of weeks ago I told [my husband] he should check [the baby monitor] more when it notifies him so he can see the baby since I know he misses her since he’s gone back to work.” She added there is a mutual respect between the two to not listen in through the monitor during the day, though.

But, when she needed a vent session with her best friend to unload her feelings of “housework he hasn’t done, how he doesn’t listen, you know, the normal things that build up inside,” she didn’t realize her husband was checking in during that very moment. “He came home and after the kids were asleep he said, ‘Well, your plan backfired because I went to watch the baby today and heard you talking mad sh*t,’” wrote the Reddit user.

Parents share their ‘caught on the baby monitor’ conversations

Thankfully, the Reddit user’s husband took the conversation lightheartedly, but it still left the mom feeling horrible. After sharing her story, she reached out to the Reddit community to exclaim, “Share stories to make me feel better!” And the other Reddit parents delivered.

Other moms vent about their husband through the baby monitor

The Reddit user isn’t the only one who accidentally—or intentionally—unloaded her frustrations through the baby monitor. These moms have, too.

“Literally just the other day, I was rocking the baby to sleep in her room. I had left the baby monitor on in the kitchen since her last nap, I was doing dishes. My husband was in the kitchen being loud [as f*ck]. I very quietly was like, ‘Dude, shut up, why you stomping around like a three-legged elephant out there.’ And I heard, ‘Are you calling me fat?’ from the camera (it has two-way speech) 😂😂.” —@Hot-Squash-1072

“Girl, sometimes I sit next to the monitor hoping my husband hears my sh*t talk 😂. Maybe then he’d come home and actually put his damn shoes in the closet and not on the floor for me to trip over!” —@FeistyMasterpiece872

“My husband and my love language is roasting each other. There are so many times after a roast we will go back and listen to the disses [on the monitor recording] and just die of laughter.” —@Zoocreeper_

Kids share their parents’ private conversations

Several Reddit users shared that conversations caught on the baby monitor aren’t the only thing parents should worry about. When you’re a parent to an older kid, they have no problem sharing your private conversations!

“We went to a birthday party and as we were leaving I said how great it was and thanked them for inviting us and my kid immediately blurts out, ‘But mom you said you didn’t even want to come’ then looks them dead in the face and says, ‘She thinks your dog is annoying too.'” —@New_Customer_5438

“My son snitched on me to one of my coworkers one day. He came in with his dad to pick me up from work while my car was in the shop. She introduced herself to him and he said, ‘Are you really annoying and nosy?’ And when she asked him where he heard that he pointed RIGHT AT ME
” —@definetly_ahuman

“The other day I ordered Chinese [food] online and I accidentally selected the restaurant on the other side of town instead of the one down the street for pickup. My husband and 4 year old went to go pick it up while I stayed home with the baby to nurse her, and they got stuck in traffic for an hour. As soon as they finally got home, my son runs into the bedroom and goes, ‘Mommy, is it true your brain is broken????’ And I cracked up. I imagined my husband was probably saying stuff like that in the car and my son just confirmed it haha.”—@Ekyou

“You mean like how the other day my daughter told my mother-in-law, ‘You said you were getting our bikes out today but mommy said let’s see if it happens because you always say you’re going to do something and it doesn’t happen.’ I mean
it’s true, but damn kid can you get this bus off my back? LMAO.” —@ceebee25

“My 5 year old announced loudly at the pool that her daddy spanks her mommy.” —@Wise_Can8817

Parents caught roasting other family members

What’s worse, getting caught roasting your partner in a conversation on the baby monitor or getting caught talking about another family member? These stories may have you hiding from your family members at the next family function.

“Oh, I have a good one for this. We rented a vacation house with my MIL and mom when my now 3 year old was an infant. My husband and I were in the bedroom while baby was napping and forgot the monitor was on. We both talked mad shit about my husband’s brother and sister-and-law and discussed what sexual activities we might partake in after bedtime. A real two for one deal. My MIL heard it all. Absolutely mortifying.” —@BaseballHairy9548

“I first started dating my husband in April 2014. I went to my stepdad’s community college graduation that following month. On the way to our seats, I somehow left my phone unlocked. I guess I had been texting my now husband before walking in. I started ranting about his annoying little brother to my family. The ‘speech-to-text’ feature heard all of it and sent it to my husband. Luckily, my husband felt/feels the same way. I just felt so bad, I started crying, texting, and calling him to apologize. My husband is not as close with his siblings as I was with mine, so to him, it wasn’t too big a deal. đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïžâ€ —@Popular_Camel_3559

“Eek I was complaining about my MIL to my husband in the nursery and the monitor was still on with her because she didn’t want to learn to turn it off đŸ€ŠđŸ»â€â™€ïž she was ‘nanny’ for a few months and ignored my wishes.” —@Kooky-End7255

Venting is healthy, just don’t do it by the baby monitor

Accidents happen. “It sounds like you have a really good husband, and you are overthinking for no reason,” one Reddit user commented on the original poster’s story. Another commented, “I’m not sure you were talking sh*t. Sharing frustrations with a trusted friend is different.” Even the American Heart Association says vent sessions are good for your health. “Speaking to someone who is supportive of your feelings can be helpful, even if that person offers a different perspective,” said one expert. It’s hard to say how people should react in these situations when a conversation is unexpectedly overheard, but know that everyone needs a little vent sesh sometimes. Just take it from the mom who posted her mishap to Reddit and make sure you’re not on the baby monitor while doing it.😉
