For the holidays this year, I am choosing to spend my money with more small and Black-owned businesses, especially on Small Business Saturday. It is no secret that the pandemic has been hard on everyone. But some of the most prominent hardships have been on small businesses. In the past, buying from big corporations and popular name brands was fun, exhilarating, and gave me a sense of pride. This year, though, I feel the small businesses need and deserve it more right now.
I come from a family of small business owners, so I know firsthand how difficult this pandemic has been. My dad, who owns an indoor plant and fairy garden shop, struggled when the pandemic threatened to shut down his spring and summer markets that bring in most of his revenue. My sister, who makes upscale personalized gift boxes and handmade pottery, was frantic when shipping times were extended and her pottery studio shut down.
When I shop with small businesses, I love knowing my money is going to help an actual person feed themselves or their families, help keep the lights on for one more month, or help fund a lifelong dream that’s finally coming true. Here are a few of our favorite items from small and BIPOC-owned businesses to add to your gift lists this Small Business Saturday and beyond.
