“I see the number 37.” The psychic said it so simply, like she was just reading the number on a mailbox out loud. She hadn’t asked my age. And there I was at 32, sitting in a virtual meeting with her (it was 2020), the topic of becoming a mother right there between us. My first thought was, holy moly, 37 is so far away. So I asked. Did it mean I’d have my first baby at 37? Something else? She said it felt more like I’d be done having babies by 37, but she wasn’t sure. I tucked it away and thought about it quite a bit over the next many years.

I’d come to that first psychic reading in a confusing, somber-tinged time of my life. After a couple of pregnancies ended in miscarriages, I wasn’t looking for a road map so much as a reason to hope. I thought a psychic reading could offer some small sign that motherhood would be in the cards for me. So I went in the only way I knew how: heart wide open, willing and a little anxious to hear whatever came.

What I didn’t expect was that I’d keep going back. Across both of my pregnancies, I sat with three different readers—a psychic, an Akashic records reader, and a tarot reader. And what surprised me most wasn’t anything they predicted (though many of the predictions were very cool!). Instead, it was how much I’d come to love circling back to see what came true.

Different Types of Readings

I fully believe there are people in this world who are more open and intuitive than the rest of us. A little more in tune with something most of us can’t quite hear. And I think if there’s an opportunity to sit with one of these readings and you’re receptive to it, it can be surprisingly insightful, comforting, and fun. There are lots of different options out there:

  • Psychic/intuitive: A reader tunes into your energy to share impressions about your life—past, present, and what may be ahead.
  • Tarot: The reader pulls from a deck of symbolic cards, using the images and their placement to interpret themes and possibilities in your life.
  • Oracle cards: Similar to tarot but more free-form. The deck has no fixed structure, and each one carries its own theme (affirmations, moons, animal spirits, etc.). Often used for a gentler, big-picture message.
  • Medium: A medium focuses on connecting with loved ones who have passed, relaying messages or a sense of their presence.
  • Akashic records: Rooted in the idea of a kind of cosmic “library” holding the record of every soul, the reader taps into your record to speak to your soul’s patterns, purpose, and relationships across time.
  • Astrology: Based on the position of the planets and stars at your exact time and place of birth, an astrologer interprets your birth chart to explore personality, timing, and life themes.

The Psychic Reading That Predicted My Kids

The reader who has stuck with me over the years was the very first one I saw. A psychic I met with virtually years before my son was born. I came to her hoping for some signs that motherhood was somewhere on my path in life. She wasn’t a psychic that exclusively offered insights about becoming a mom, so over an hour long call she talked about many different things, from career, to what types of things I should add in my day to keep my energy feeling strong and even stuff about my diet. But questions about babies were big for me. I hoped she could sense it without me even having to ask.

I logged off our session with a handful of insights that would take years to make sense of, with a bonus that our readings (I met with her more than once) were recorded. So I could listen and try to better understand what we talked about over time.

The parts of my reading I couldn’t stop thinking about

Very early on in my reading, she stopped and told me, very matter-of-factly, that I would become a mother. That it felt important for her to say it out loud. Then she moved on, off in a completely different direction. It was one of the most wonderful things I’d ever heard from a complete stranger.

And then there was that number: 37. I couldn’t stop turning it over, wondering what on earth it was trying to tell me.

She relayed more about motherhood, too. Like two, maybe three kids. Lots of light, and a specific image of little ones playing in front of big windows with the sun pouring in. Another of me encouraging a little boy to feed the ducks. None of it came as a guarantee, of course. The best way I can describe it is like looking through frosted glass.

“Very early on in my reading, she stopped and told me, very matter of factly, that I would become a mother…It was one of the most wonderful things I’d ever heard from a complete stranger.”

What really came true from my pregnancy psychic reading

Here’s the part that still gives me chills: I had my son at 35. And my daughter arrived just a few months ago… when I was 37. The very number she’d seen all those years before. What felt like science fiction at 32 turned out to be the year my family felt complete.

I went back to this same psychic for a reading when I was pregnant with my son, curious what she’d pick up during my pregnancy the second time around. Some things got even more specific:

  • She mentioned I’d worry over a rash in his early months, but that it would resolve. Sure enough, he had a long, tricky stretch with eczema that eventually cleared.
  • She said he’d be born vaginally, not via C-section. Yep.
  • She even had a sense the hospital would be quiet, maybe a Sunday. And he arrived on a calm Sunday, when more than one nurse remarked on how quiet the day was. We even landed a cozy room with beautiful views of the trees outside that we got to stay in longer for our recovery time.

What an Akashic Records Reading Told Me During My Second Pregnancy

Instead of a psychic reading my second pregnancy, I tried something I’d never even heard of until a family friend recommended it: an Akashic records reading. This was with a different reader entirely.

If a psychic reading is someone tuning into whatever comes up, an Akashic reading feels more like opening a book. The idea is that there’s a kind of cosmic record of your soul, and the reader “checks your records” to answer what you bring to them. What I loved was that I had a little more control here; instead of just receiving whatever came through, I could ask specific questions and wait to see what she found.

But I’ll admit, I tried to stay a little vague when I asked things. Not because I doubted her, but because I didn’t want to hand over so much detail that I’d essentially be answering my own questions. I wanted whatever came back to be her insights, not a mirror of what I’d fed her.

My daughter’s personality, before I met her

I now have a little girl who matches many of the notes from my reading.

She told me my daughter would be something of a cheerleader and that she’d have this “c’mon, Mom, you’ve got this” energy—the kind of spirit that roots for the people she loves and pushes them to go for things. She read her as an older soul. I do find these in small ways already. For one, she has recently started to constantly pat my shoulder when I’m overwhelmed. Almost like a “you’re good” tap tap tap. I think these traits may continue to unfold more as she grows. We’ll see!

And she said something I’ve thought about constantly since: that there was a special contract between my daughter and her big brother. That he would take to her right away. He did. From the very first day, my son has been remarkable with her. He has toddler-level patience for many things these days, but always has an abundance for her. He’s gentle, tuned-in, interested, and very caring. And she lights up around him as she does for no one else in the world.

The birth story nobody saw coming (except maybe the reading)

This reader also told me my daughter would come before her due date, and that it would be fast.

Yes, and yes.

My daughter was born at home (unplanned) on my bathroom floor. She arrived mere moments before the EMTs pulled up, and before my husband came home from picking up our toddler at daycare. The one person who was there? My mother-in-law, who happens to be deeply intuitive herself. I’d asked her to come at a certain time, but she showed up a full hour early because she had a gut feeling she should. She ended up helping me bring my daughter into the world, right there on the bathroom floor.

Fast and early, the reader had said. She wasn’t wrong.

A Tarot Reader at a Backyard BBQ

Not every reading I’ve had was something I sought out. One of my favorites happened at a girls’ summer barbecue, where a friend had brought in a tarot reader for fun (highly recommend!). I was first-trimester pregnant with my daughter at the time and, with the help of a loose jumpsuit, not showing much yet.

The reader looked at me and asked, almost right away, if there was someone new in my life. I told her I was expecting. Without missing a beat, she said it was a girl. Then she told me something that has stuck with me: that my husband would share a really special bond with this little girl. That it would be beautiful to watch. She said he’d see so much of me in her, and that it would become its own kind of cycle of love. I think about that one often, especially in the ordinary moments when I catch the two of them together.

It was a short reading, and plenty of it had nothing to do with babies at all. But there were a few other things she called out, and here’s how they’ve held up so far:

  • That I’d love dressing her in bold pinks. Eh, not so much. She owns exactly one pair of hot pink shorts, and honestly gets mistaken for a boy more often than not.
  • That she’d be especially close with another woman in my life. Take your pick! Between her aunts, her grandmothers, and my closest friends, this little girl has already hit the lottery.

Am I Just Seeing What I Want To?

I’m not naive about what’s happening here. I know how this works: someone offers you a handful of perceptions, all warm and open-ended, and your brain gets busy finding ways to make them fit. It’s the same reason a horoscope can feel written just for you.

Take those shoulder pats I mentioned. Is my 6-month-old really reassuring me when I’m overwhelmed and telling me I’ve got this? Well… Almost certainly not. She’s a baby, and babies pat things. But my husband noticed it too, unprompted, and said it looked like she was encouraging me. So who knows. I’ve made my peace with the fact that I don’t need it to be true to love that it might be.

And plenty of what these readers told me hasn’t happened at all. At least not yet:

  • One mentioned we’d have a nanny. Nope, not so far.
  • Another saw me running a little group where moms would come over, and I’d entertain their kids for a bit. A lovely image, but it hasn’t happened. And it’s not something I’m really striving to do.
  • There were hints of having a third child. This is highly unlikely.
  • And a sense that our family might move. We’re still in the same home, and I’m not sure I ever see that changing.

Why These Readings Helped During Pregnancy—And Beyond

Every psychic reading I’ve had—those before pregnancy and after—opens the same way: a promise that nothing scary is coming. No death, no doom, no ominous warnings. Instead, just insights, offered kindly and with some hope and intrigue. And this was especially so in that first reading, when I was admittedly anxious and aching for good news. Her disclaimer turned the whole thing into something soft that I really did need, which was a shared hour with someone who simply wanted to help me see possibility in my own life.

And that’s what these readings really gave me. It was honestly never the predictions. Instead, it was permission. Permission to hope during a time when I’d almost stopped letting myself. Permission to believe that motherhood was still coming for me, that the baby I hadn’t met yet already had a whole personality waiting, that abundance was on its way.

If you’ve ever considered a reading, I think there’s more to gain from one than a few predictions. A good one can:

  • Offer a real dose of hope, especially in an uncertain time in your life when you need something to hold onto.
  • Give you a playful, low-stakes way to imagine the future, like who your kids might be, what’s on the horizon, what you’re wishing for.
  • Surface little insights about yourself, like the patterns, hopes, or worries in your life.

“Every reading I’ve had opens the same way: a promise that nothing scary is coming … Just insights, offered kindly and with some hope and intrigue.”

The Most Surprising Thing I Learned

So, did everything come true? Some of it, yes, eerily so. Right down to the number 37 and the Sagittarius baby girl (the Akashic reader was adamant she’d be a Sag, even though my due date fell right on the Sagittarius–Capricorn cusp).

And some of it hasn’t, and maybe never will.

But here’s the surprising part: whether these readings were right was never really the point.

What I didn’t see coming was how much comfort there is in circling back. These readings have become a kind of time capsule I get to reopen as life unfolds. I don’t reread my notes or listen back because the readings control anything. I keep them close because on the hard days, they remind me that once, a near-stranger looked at my life and saw so much good coming, and so much of it did.
