Welcoming a newborn into the world is the most magical time of our lives. If we had to venture a guess, the feeling is comparable to flying with dragons, casting a bewitching spell, or saving the world. Nothing beats the excitement of meeting your little one for the first time, and you’re quickly introduced to a love that feels supernatural.

In honor of this otherworldly experience, we wanted to impart some baby name inspiration—as we know, selecting the perfect one can be more difficult than slaying an age-old enemy. If it feels like you’re going to need a fairy godmother in order for you to pick a baby name at this point, look no further. We bestow upon you all of the fantasy baby names of your dreams. Inspired by our favorite TV series, fantasy books, and movies, you’re sure to find the most fantastic options here.

Fantasy Baby Names for Girls

Alicent

When Game of Thrones ended, every one of us wanted more—especially more dragons. House of the Dragon gave us exactly what we were looking for and more. The first of many fantasy baby names from HOTD on our list, we love that Alicent is reminiscent of the classic Alice or Allyson with just a little extra spunk. Fitting for a queen, the German name means “noble.”

Alys

Speaking of Alice, we love this alternative spelling also from HOTD. If you’re looking to raise a “strange kind of woman,” this name is for you.

Amarantha

From a reader-favorite book series, A Court of Thorns and Roses, comes this mystifying moniker. Though evil and vindictive in the series, we can still appreciate her unique title. With Italian and Greek roots, it means “unfading”—just like your love for your little girl.

Arwen

A favorite fantasy series for many and an instant classic, The Lord of the Rings gave us plenty of magical baby names if we were looking for something really unique—Gandalf, anyone? One of the more conventional options that’s just as bewitching is Arwen. Perfect for your little princess.

Arya

We can’t think of a better namesake than the one who saves the day in Game of Thrones. Fittingly, this Sanskrit name means “noble.”

Avery

With such a charming meaning for a future leader—”ruler of the elves”—we couldn’t leave this popular girl’s name off the list of fantasy-inspired baby names.

Bella/Bellatrix

It doesn’t get much more lovely than the quiet and moody Bella Swan from Twilight. But we’re also inspired by the Harry Potter character played by Helena Bonham Carter, Bellatrix Lestrange.

Brianna

Not all fantasy baby names are uncommon. In fact, we love this conventional option, meaning “noble,” from Outlander.

Brienne

The forever honorable female knight Brienne of Tarth was a fan-favorite you couldn’t help but root for in GOT. Of English origin, Brienne also means “high” or “noble.”

Buffy

If you’re a die-hard fan of the most iconic vampire slayer, let the world know by giving your little one this fierce title. Interestingly, the name is derived from Elizabeth and holds the same meaning of “God is my oath.”

Catelyn

Another more common option comes from the matriarch of the Stark family in GOT. Because you’ll be filled with “pure” happiness when seeing your little one, this name may be the perfect option.

Claire

Another Outlander inclusion, Claire is a noble nurse turned doctor and time traveler. The lovely French name means “bright” and “clear.”

Cersei

While terms like “wicked” may come to mind when thinking of this GOT character, her unique title doesn’t need to have a bad rep. If we look at the redeeming qualities associated with the name—including cunning and undeniably loving to those she holds dear—this may be a great unique baby name to bestow on your little one.

Dany

On the other throne, we’re inspired by a more lovable GOT character with this inclusion, Daenerys Targaryen. Either have a full fan moment when filling out the birth certificate or opt for something simpler like Dany for your very own Mother of Dragons.

Éowyn

Another out-of-this-world but not-out-of-the-realm-of-possibility option from The Lord of the Rings is the lovely Éowyn. If we directly translate the name from Old English, it means “joy from horses.”

Feyre

The name Freya has been inching its way up the Social Security Administration baby name charts since 2013, making its way to the 129th top spot in 2022. If you’re looking for something that sounds similar but is a little less common and is inspired by the fantasy series ACOTAR, consider Feyre. The feminine French name means “beautiful” or “fair.”

Fleur

Similarly, if you’re more of a Harry Potter fan and are keen on the witches of Beauxbatons Academy of Magic, Fleur—meaning “flower”—may be fitting for your little blossom.

Geillis

Though she may be a villain in Outlander, Geillis Duncan’s name is rich in history. With Scottish roots dating back to the 16th century, it holds the meaning of “shining” and “bright.”

Gillian

We’ll draw fantasy baby name inspiration from our TV screen and the big screen! This inclusion is inspired by one of our favorite fall movie re-watches, Practical Magic. The troublemaker of the sister witch duo, Gillian has a title that means “youthful.”

Ginny

Perhaps one of the most underrated aspects of the entire Harry Potter series was watching the evolution of the young Weasley girl, Ginny. Raise your little one to have her very own “glow up” with this charming title meaning “pure.”

Helaena

Reminiscent of the classic Greek name Helena is this moniker brought to us by House of the Dragon.

Hermione

Another Harry Potter inclusion, this one may give away that you’re a super fan, but who’s complaining about that? The series wouldn’t be what it is without her, and we love her nearly as much as the actress who played her, Emma Watson. The Greek name means “messenger.”

Luna

Currently holding the number 10 spot for most popular baby names for girls is this adorable title brought to our list by Luna Lovegood of Harry Potter. Fit for a magical little one, it means “moon.”

Matilda

Many of us likely hold great affection for this name thanks to the iconic ’90s film. Teleport this name meaning “mighty in battle”—and easily shortened to the adorable Millie or Tilly—to the top of your baby names list.

Minerva

An ancient baby name option, Minerva was said to be the Roman goddess of wisdom and invention. You may know her more affectionately as Professor McGonagall from Harry Potter.

Philippa

Meaning “lover of horses,” readers of the popular book series The Witcher may recognize it as a sorceress advisor.

Piper

Those of us who love iconic ’90s witches will instantly recognize this title as one of the sister witches—and a pivotal member of the “Power of Three”—from the Charmed series. The middle turned oldest sister, who wants nothing more than to lead a normal life, has a classic occupational name meaning “flute player.”

Phoebe

Part two of the “Power of Three” is the sister with perhaps the best character development arc ever. Phoebe is a great namesake for a little girl to have, especially as the title means “radiant” and “pure.”

Prudence

Known for being the headstrong eldest sister in Charmed, Prue has a gorgeous, medieval virtue-style baby name that means “wise.”

Rhiannon

If you couldn’t flip the pages of Fourth Wing fast enough, perhaps this name meaning “goddess” is perfect for your little reader in the making. We also love that it brings forth the catchy Fleetwood Mac song of the same name—one we wouldn’t mind having stuck in our heads for years to come.

Rosalie

If sparkling vampires are more your thing, consider this name brought to our list by the beautiful but irritable Rosalie Hale in Twilight. Her beautiful French name means “rose garden.”

Sansa

The eldest daughter of the Stark family in GOT epitomized the quote: What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Of Sanskrit origin and means “praise” and “charm”.

Tissaia

Because your new little girl is sure to put a love spell on you, give her this name inspired by the poise sorceress from The Witcher.

Yennefer

Another inclusion from The Witcher is this great alternative to the popular Jennifer. In the series, she is also a sorceress.

Fantasy Baby Names for Boys

Aegon

A name fit for a little prince, Aegon is one of the many royal members of the Targaryen family in Game of Thrones.

Alastor

Not only is this inclusion inspired by Alastor Moody of Harry Potter, but it also has a great history with Greek roots. It was an epithet of Zeus and holds the meaning of “man’s defender.”

Alaric

Fans of The Vampire Diaries will equate this to the complicated but honorable teacher, Alaric Saltzman. The ancient title comes from German origins and means “ruler of all.”

Albus

One of the most beloved characters in the Harry Potter universe is Professor Albus Dumbledore. A little one of this title is sure to grow up to be incredibly wise with a namesake such as that.

Alcide

True Blood fans will quickly equate this name to the hunky werewolf “packmaster”—AKA Alpha. The masculine name has Greek roots and means “glory of Hera.”

Azriel

ACOTAR readers will recognize this name as a spymaster and member of the Night Court. The sticking name has Hebrew roots and means “God is my help.”

Bran

Short for Brandon, this title is brought to our list of fantasy baby names thanks to Bran Stark of GOT. As viewers know, the show wouldn’t be the same without him—just like your life without your newborn baby. The name means “broom-covered hill.”

Carlisle

Both a city in England and the name of the patriarch of the Cullen family in Twilight, Carlisle is the perfect choice if you are a lover of fantasy or travel.

Cassian

This Ancient Latin title means “cinnamon,” but was brought to our list thanks to the childhood friend of Rhysand and Azriel and a member of the Night Court in ACOTAR.

Cedric

Before there was Edward Cullen, Robert Pattinson played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter. A popular choice in the 1970s is this name ready for a revival, meaning “kindly” and “loved.”

Cole

Here we’re inspired by Ser Criston Cole of House of the Dragon. If you’re more keen on witchy shows than dragons, you could also be inspired by the demonic ex-husband of Phoebe Halliwell in Charmed. Either way, the strong Greek name means “victory of the people.”

Cullen

A perfect option for those of us who swear they read the Twilight series first, you’re sure to raise a little charmer with this title. Fittingly, the surname turned first name means “handsome.”

Damon

Though Damon and Stefan were turned into vampires in 1864, this name dates much farther back in the history books. This Vampire Diaries inclusion means “one who tames” and dates back to Ancient Greece.

Dean

Fantasy includes all things Supernatural, so it was only right to include this Old English name, meaning “valley.”

Enzo

Another inclusion from The Vampire Diaries comes to our list from a highly underrated character who was complicated but entirely lovable. His Italian name means “home ruler.”

Geralt

If you have an influential Gerald in your family tree but the name feels a bit too old school, consider this unconventional option inspired by The Witcher. The name is said to mean “spear ruler.”

Harry

We couldn’t make all of these Harry Potter inclusions without involving Harry himself. The classic masculine name also means “home ruler.”

Hugh

For a little one preparing to be part of the “Dance of the Dragons,” be sure to bestow him with this old-school title meaning “spirit.”

Jamie

While many of us had complex feelings about Jamie from GOT, we were reintroduced to another Jamie from a different fantasy series, Outlander. This makes the name a great title for a little boy, and it holds the meaning of “one who supplants.”

Jasper

If you love the sound of this name, you’re not alone. It reached new heights on the charts in 2023 as the 122nd most popular choice for boys. We’re inspired by the complicated vampire in the Twilight series.

Jon

While perhaps not the most inventive name on our list, we couldn’t discuss fantasy baby names without mentioning Jon Snow of Game of Thrones. No matter how you felt about the series ending, we can all agree the complex character was noble. The French derivative of the classic John means “God has given.”

Laenor

Rider of the dragon Seasmoke, Laenor is from House of the Dragon. We love this option for a little boy (or girl!) for an option that’s creative but not too out there.

Neville

Another of our favorite character developments from Harry Potter is that of Neville Longbottom. To raise a little one with great courage, Neville may be the perfect name. It means “new village.”

Niklaus

Speaking of character development, fans of The Vampire Diaries spinoff series, The Originals, will instantly recognize this ancient name. Easily shortened to Nik or Klaus—as in the vampire series—this name means “victory of the people.”

Otto

While fans are divided in their opinions of Otto Hightower in House of the Dragon, the ancient name meaning “wealth” is certainly one to consider.

Rickon

The youngest of the Stark clan of GOT, this unique name is fit for the newest king of your heart as it means “brave ruler.”

Samwise/Samwell

Undoubtedly the most lovable character from Lord of the Rings, Samwise Gamgee is as loyal as they come. While Samwell Tarley was one of the most endearing characters in GOT. Plus, either name can be shortened to the cute nicknames Sam or Sammy.

Stefan

The other Salvatore vampire brother, Stefan is as compassionate as vampires come. Derived from the Greek Stephanos, the name means “crown.”

Tyrion

That’s what I do—I pick great baby names—and I know things. Said every mom ever! A fan favorite in Game of Thrones nearly rounds out our list. Raise a little one who’s as sharp as Tyrion Lannister with this name, meaning “gentle” and “kind.”

Wolf

Several of our favorite fantasy series would be incomplete without the inclusion of a cunning werewolf or two. That’s why we had to include this edgy baby name option that nods to the powerful and loyal animal.

Xaden

Finishing off our list with Xaden Riorson of Fourth Wing just feels right. The American name is a great alternative to more popular choices like Aiden, and it means “abundance.”
