As an expectant mom currently 24 weeks pregnant with my first child, I’m in full-on prep mode when it comes to buying baby gear and adding must-have items to my registry. From a stroller and car seat to a bassinet and baby carrier, I want to make sure we have everything we need when our little one arrives this fall. But with President Trump’s tariffs impacting the cost of (already expensive) baby gear, I keep wondering if products on my registry will jump up in price. And, knowing the likelihood of that happening could come any day, should I stock up on the items now to avoid overpaying?
Mockingbird price changes
While many popular baby gear brands have already increased their prices due to tariffs, some are notifying potential customers of cost changes ahead of time. On Monday, May 12, Mockingbird—the makers of a single-to-double stroller and high chair that are favorites among moms—was the latest company to announce price adjustments to their products.
“As you’ve likely seen, new tariffs have been drastically impacting the global supply chain since February, leading to a wave of price increases on baby products. As parents ourselves, we know all too well the impact this has had on families, so we’ve been doing everything we can at Mockingbird to shoulder these new costs ourselves—but at this point, increasing our prices has unfortunately become unavoidable,” a statement on their website explained.
I was, thankfully, notified about the Mockingbird price changes via newsletter ahead of time and made the decision to purchase the stroller on my registry a day before the increase went into affect. Their single-to-double stroller went from $450 to $599 and though it was an unexpected add to our monthly budget, I was happy to save the $150 in the long run by purchasing the stroller a bit earlier than I actually need.
If you, like me, are wondering what baby brands may be raising the cost of their products next, I’m here to help. Whether you’re pregnant and purchasing these items for your future kiddo or buying baby shower gifts for loved ones, it’s helpful to know the best time to purchase to avoid tariff pricing, when possible. Below, I’m breaking down everything you need to know about baby gear price changes and when you should buy items ahead of time, if your budget allows.
Why are tariffs affecting baby gear pricing?
President Trump’s tariffs are essentially additional taxes placed on imported goods. Adding tariffs onto certain products makes them more expensive for the consumer, so the goal behind them is to encourage people to instead buy locally and stimulate the U.S. economy. But with 95 percent of strollers and three-quarters of toys and infant furniture imported from China, the imposed 145 percent tariff rate on Chinese goods is directly impacting baby gear pricing in America. According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, manufacturers from elsewhere can’t efficiently live up to the U.S.’s rigorous safety standards, so parents have no choice but to eat the cost of vital baby products.
Though the U.S. and China recently agreed to significantly reduce tariffs on each other for the next 90 days, many baby brands have still increased prices in preparation for these rising production costs.
