There’s something about a great pair of tall boots that can instantly pull an outfit together, whether it’s a classic riding boot with leggings or a cozy sweater, or a stunning pair of suede boots with a dress; I’ve always loved the look. The only problem? I’m 5’ 2”. And finding a pair of boots for petite women that actually fits is surprisingly difficult.

After plenty of shopping around for tall boots that work for my petite frame, I’ve learned the right pair comes down to more than how they look. Shaft height, calf circumference, and even how easy they are to pull on can make the difference between a pair you reach for constantly and one that sits in the back of your closet.

So, I put a couple of popular styles to the test to find the perfect petite-friendly tall boots. From everyday waterproof options to beautiful suede riding boots, here’s what I thought of each pair, what worked, and what I’d recommend to petite women who are struggling to find the best boots this season.

How I chose the best tall boots that were petite-friendly

At just 5’2”, I know shopping for tall boots takes a little more research than ordering my usual shoe size. Knee-high boots that look perfectly proportioned on a model can practically touch my kneecaps, bunch around my ankles, or overwhelm my shorter legs. And while any boot can look great on Instagram, I need to know the shaft height, calf circumference, and how they actually look on my frame.

To find the best options, I tested styles at a range of price points, wearing each pair to evaluate fit, comfort, and overall look. I paid close attention to where they hit on my legs, how they fit my calves, whether they got more comfortable with wear, and how easy they were to get on and off (which matters more than you might think!).

What I look for in tall boots

  • Shaft height: This is the first thing I check when shopping for tall boots. On a petite 5’2” frame, even an extra inch can make a difference. I want boots that hit below my knees without digging in or overwhelming my legs.
  • Calf circumference: Some boots are surprisingly snug, while others leave too much room. I look for a comfortable fit with bare legs or tights, with enough room to wear them over pants when needed.
  • Ease of putting them on: After trying several pairs, I’ve learned that zippers and pull tabs matter! Structured leather boots without them can be a real struggle to get on and off.
  • Comfort: I love a heeled boot, but between working from home, running errands, and keeping up with my kids, comfort is nonnegotiable. I look for manageable heel heights, supportive soles, and materials that soften with wear.
  • Versatility: If I’m investing in boots, I want to wear them on repeat. I prioritize classic colors and silhouettes that work with jeans, leggings, dresses, and skirts without feeling dated next season.

The best tall boots for petites I tried

Steve Madden Riggs Boots

steve madden boots best boots for petite women

Pros

  • Petite-friendly height
  • Sleek, classic, versatile style
  • Comfortable once broken in
  • Available in wide-calf sizing

Cons

  • Very difficult to get on and off
  • Narrow calf fit
  • Leather needs breaking in

The Steve Madden Riggs Boots are one that I felt like I saw over and over again on social media. With a sleek, classic silhouette, they instantly feel polished without being overly dressy, and the height is particularly flattering on my 5’2″ frame.

There is, however, one pretty significant downside: Getting them on is a chore. There are no zippers or pull tabs to help you slide your foot in, which makes putting them on much more difficult than it should be. I found myself having to really work to get them over my feet and calves, especially before the leather had a chance to loosen up. Thankfully, once they’re on and broken in, they’re actually quite comfortable, but it definitely made me appreciate how much easier a few other pairs were to get on.

I also found the calves to be on the narrower side, which is something to consider if you’re planning to wear them over jeans or have fuller calves. Thankfully, Steve Madden offers a wide-calf version of this style, which I think is very necessary given the sizing of these.

If you’re willing to put up with the initial struggle of getting them on, these are a great, versatile pair of boots that work especially well on shorter legs. I’m wearing the lighter Banana Leather color, but I’ve also been eyeing the darker brown for another look altogether.

Dolce Vita Glory H2O Boots

dolce vita tall boots best boots for petite women

Pros

  • Waterproof for rainy and snowy weather
  • Easy to get on and off with side zipper
  • Sleeker alternative to bulky weather boots
  • Great for everyday wear and errands

Cons

  • More casual, substantial look
  • Not ideal for dressier outfits

The Dolce Vita Glory H2O Boots are easily one of my favorite practical options on this list. I live in the Northeast where we have plenty of cold, rainy, and snowy days ahead, and I need footwear that can handle it. That makes it extra convenient that this pair is waterproof, without looking like traditional rain boots. They have a slightly more casual, substantial look than some of the other boots on this list, but that’s also part of their appeal.

After the struggle of getting the Riggs on, I was especially appreciative of the side zipper, which makes these incredibly easy to put on and take off. It’s a small detail, but one that makes a big difference when you’re trying to get out the door.

Of course, this isn’t a pair I’d wear with my dressiest outfits, but that’s not really what they’re designed for. Instead, they’re a sleeker alternative to bulkier weather boots when you want to look a little more put together. This is the kind of pair I’d throw on with jeans, a sweater, and a coat for school drop-off, errands, or a casual day out. If you live somewhere with unpredictable weather and want a tall boot that can withstand the weather, these are worth considering.

Quince Italian Leather Block Heel Boot

quince leather boots best boots for petite women

Pros

  • Timeless, elevated look for the price
  • Roomy calf circumference
  • Easy to pull on with discreet tabs
  • Great for wearing over pants

Cons

  • Stiff leather at first
  • Requires breaking in

At this point, I’ve tried enough Quince products to know the brand offers impressive quality for the price, and the Italian Leather Block Heel Boots are no exception. The pair has a timeless, non-trendy look that feels more expensive than it is.

One of the biggest standouts to me was the calf circumference. Unlike some of the other boots I tried, these are generously sized at the calves, making them a great option for a wider range of body types and for anyone who wants to wear them over pants. I also really appreciate the internal pull tabs, which make it much easier to slip them on. The tabs are also discreet enough that they don’t interfere with the boots’ look, but they’re incredibly helpful when you’re getting dressed.

However, they do require some breaking in. The first few times I wore them, I found them a little uncomfortable, and the leather felt noticeably stiff. However, they became easier to wear over time, and I think that’s an important distinction if you’re trying them on for the first time. Don’t necessarily expect them to feel perfectly broken in straight out of the box.

Tuckernuck Shoes Chocolate Suede Ryder Boots

tuckernuck best boots for petite women

Pros

  • Most comfortable pair tested
  • Chic, elevated chocolate suede
  • No break-in period needed
  • Easy to slip on and off
  • Timeless investment style

Cons

  • Most expensive pair on the list
  • Suede isn’t ideal for wet weather

It pains me to say this, considering they’re the most expensive pair on this list, but the Tuckernuck Chocolate Suede Ryder Boots are, by far, the most comfortable tall boots I tried. And unfortunately for my wallet, they’re also one of my favorite pairs aesthetically.

These boots are everything I want in a tall boot. The chocolate suede is absolutely beautiful, the silhouette feels incredibly chic, and they instantly make even a simple outfit look more elevated. But what really surprised me was how comfortable they were from the moment I put them on. Unlike some of the other leather boots I tested, these didn’t require a frustrating break-in period. They slip on easily (without a zipper or tabs), feel amazing on, and are genuinely comfortable enough that I don’t find myself counting down the minutes until I can take them off.

My one hesitation is the suede. While I love the look, I get a little nervous about wearing suede boots when the weather is questionable. Obviously these aren’t a pair I’d grab if I knew I was going to be walking through puddles or dealing with slushy sidewalks. But for a day out, dinner, or any occasion when I want my outfit to feel a little more elevated, they’re pretty much perfect.

They’re definitely an investment, but I also think they’re the kind of classic boots that can last for years with proper care. If you’re looking for one beautiful pair of tall boots that feels as good as it looks, these are the ones I’d recommend splurging on.

Sam Edelman Porter Boots

sam edelman tall boots for petite woman

Pros

  • Very comfortable and easy to walk in
  • Convenient side zipper
  • Versatile color and styling options
  • Roomy calf fits well over jeans
  • Flattering with dresses and tights

Cons

  • Taller shaft hits just below the kneecap

When I first started looking around for the best tall boots for petite women, the Sam Edelman Porter Boots were a pair I saw come up pretty consistently. Once I tried them on, I got the hype! They’re incredibly comfortable, and they check off just about every box I was looking for: a zipper, comfort, and a versatile color. I rarely wear heels (mostly because I’m admittedly a little uncoordinated), but the height on these was surprisingly easy to walk in, and I never felt like I was sacrificing comfort for a little extra height.

The one thing I’d point out for fellow short girls is that the height is on the taller side, sitting right below the kneecap. That said, I really like how they looked paired with a mini dress, and the combo of the taller shaft and heel made for a particularly flattering silhouette. For those that want a suede boot at a more mid-level price than the Tuckernucks, this is what I’d recommend.
