Iāve noticed a pattern in my TikTok scrolls as of late. Every time Iāve opened the app over the last couple of weeks, Iāve seen some sort of fall fashion trends video. From āthe shoes weāre wearing this fallā to āthe trends youāll be seeing everywhere this season,ā people seem to be excited about fall fashion. However, Iāve noticed another commonality in the comment sections. Commenters are answering āWhat shoes are we wearing this fall?ā with āThe shoes I already have in my closetā or āThe same shoes I wore last fall.ā
As someone who loves fashion (and especially loves fall fashion), itās hard for me to imagine a change of seasons without a wardrobe refresh. But with inflation so high and āunderconsumption coreā trending, itās no surprise that people are hoping to shop their own closets this fall. Fortunately, a large majority of 2024ās fall trends are ones that you probably already have in your closet.
Just like last year, leopard print, red, and metallics can be seen in the new arrivals section of every major retailer. Those quiet luxury items you picked up after Sofia Richieās wedding and your coastalāgrandma or cowgirlāpieces can definitely still be styled for 2024. And, of course, we have the fall fashion staples that will literally never go out of style: rich denim, suede, knitwear, knee-high boots, a trench coatā¦ you know the deal.
How I narrowed down 2024’s fall fashion trends
If thereās one thing about me, itās that Iām chronically online. Itās part of my job to stay in the know about the latest happenings in fashion. I scroll TikTok and Instagram every day (you knowā¦ for work), taking note of what people are wearing, buying, talking about, and recommending. Iām constantly checking out Everymom-favorite retailers for their latest drops and taking note of anything that might be of interest to all of you.
As a commerce editor, Iām usually researching and recommending things for our readers to buy. But the most important thing is to provide you with valuable content. And if that means giving you tips on how to shop your own closet without buying anything new, thatās what Iāll do! (If you are looking for something new to add to your wardrobe this year, however, be sure to check out our fall capsule wardrobe and the rest of our mom fashion content.)
With so much fall fashion discourse out there, it can be hard to narrow everything down and figure out a short list of trends that are actually wearable. So, I did the work for you. I combed through autumn/winter runway reports for this year and trend breakdowns from major fashion magazines, as well as whatās hot on social media and Pinterest, to pull together this list of eight fall fashion trends for 2024.
Earth tones
Earth tones for fall? Groundbreaking. But really, this fall is all about gorgeous deep hues of burgundy, olive green, chocolate brown, and navy blue. The best part of this trend is that it’s incredibly easy to style. These colors are basically neutrals, so you can wear them with anything. They can also be worn togetherāan olive green jacket with a burgundy bag is a match made in heaven. If you’re feeling adventurous, partner chocolate brown and navy blue in one look.
Preppy and corporate-chic
If you have anything in your closet that looks like Blair Waldorf might wear it, dust it off. Your blazers, button-ups, pleated skirts, Mary Janes, and lady jackets get another season of being center stage this year. Pair your blazer with a pair of wide-leg jeans and ballet flats for a laid-back-chic look. Pleated skirts pair perfectly with an oversized sweater and sneakers, especially during the transition from summer to fall.
And if you have a whole treasure trove of corporate wear from your pre-Covid office days, shift that to the front of your closet as well. Trousers are no longer just for work. Anything with a tailored, suiting-style look will make you look instantly fashionable this year.
Denim on denim
Denim on denim never really goes out of style, but different iterations of the look have come and gone throughout the years. This season, the trusty pairing is very Scandi-chic. An oversized denim button-up shirt with baggier jeans and red or animal print ballet flats and accessories is the look of fall 2024.
Boho
Are you having flashbacks of Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella? Don’t worry: 2024’s boho is the demure older sister of 2013 boho. Tasteful, ’70s-inspired additions of fringe, suede, dark florals, and lace bring a little something special to any fall outfit. I like to think about this iteration of boho through the lens of small outfit swaps. Instead of a small shoulder bag, go for an oversized suede tote. Rather than throwing on sneakers with your maxi skirt, grab those cowboy boots you purchased since they’ve been trending for the last few years. Opt for a fun quilted or patchwork jacket instead of a neutral one.
Turtlenecks and high necklines
This one comes straight from the runways. Many designers’ autumn/winter 2024 collections included high necklines or turtlenecks. Obviously, turtlenecks have never gone out of style, but they are the neckline of choice this year. When you go to put together an outfit that includes some sort of tee, grab your favorite turtleneck and layer it with your jacket of choice. We’re also seeing turtlenecks pop up in clothing pieces where you might not expect them, like sleeveless dresses.
Animal print
Whether you want to break out your trusty leopard or go even further back in the archives to pull out some zebra, animal prints are going to be big again this year. Even snakeskin, which had a major moment in the late 2010s, is back in a new, elevated way. If you hung onto any animal print accessoriesāsuch as belts, bags, coats, or shoesānow’s the time to pull them out again. It’s a great way to add something fun to your outfit while keeping it neutral.
Shades of red
Whoever is doing PR for the color red deserves a raise! It’s hanging on for yet another season of being the “IT” color. From classic cherry to the deep burgundy I mentioned earlier, red will be everywhere yet again. So keep wearing your red ballet flats, shoulder bags, and cardigans. And I’ll keep saving literally every single outfit with red in it that I see on Pinterest or Instagram for future inspiration.
