As someone with an interest in fashion, I always look forward to the change in style preferences that come with each passing season. Every year, a fresh batch of trends are brought to the forefront of public favor. Some brand new and some a visit from the past.
This year has witnessed the rise of a number of throwback trends, from charm jewelry to mid-rise jeans. But my own personal favorite revival has been that of the graphic tee. They’re playful, laid-back, and a fun way to wear your personality. But—as with anything—not all graphic tees are created equal. So, when it comes to the best graphic tees, what exactly constitutes the “best?” And how, as a mom, does one go about styling them?
I’ve spent a lot of time (probably too much time) thinking these questions through, admittedly trying to ensure I don’t accidentally relive my middle and high school years. And after too much self-proclaimed time spent contemplating this matter, here’s what I—as a mom of two and a lifelong graphic tee enthusiast—have come up with.
What I Look for in the Best Graphic Tees
Once a style is deemed trendy, it’s not difficult to find said trend lining the physical shelves and bombarding the shopping pages of retailers everywhere. But in the sea of options, there are always both diamonds and duds. And when it comes to the best graphic tees, there are definitely a number of qualities to consider.
As a mom, these qualities include a compelling quality-to-price ratio, timelessness, and fit. I’m personally looking for tees that are soft and comfortable, that won’t break the bank, and that will still be stylish several years from now.
When it comes to fit, I’m not fully devoted to one style over another—and I don’t believe you should be either! I personally enjoy having a variety lining my dresser drawer, enabling a broader spectrum of outfitting possibilities. I believe baby tees, fitted tees, and oversized tees all have merit. In other words, you’re more likely to feel like you have “nothing to wear” if all of your graphic tees are the same cut and style. Embrace variety!
How to Style Graphic Tees
What’s wonderful about graphic tees is that you can easily throw one on with a favorite pair of jeans or shorts and call it a day. And while there’s something to be said for simplicity, you can also get a lot more out of your graphic tees if you think outside the box.
The beautiful thing about a tried-and-true graphic tee is that, when it comes to how they’re styled, you can’t go wrong. They pair well with an endless variety of bottoms, jackets, shoes, and accessories. Think about the occasion and environment you’re dressing for, grab for the pieces you love most, and have fun with it. Here are four graphic tee styling ideas to get you started.
With Boxer Shorts and Sneakers
I’ve spent a solid 80 percent of my summer living in this outfit formula. It’s both comfortable and cute on hot days. Boxer shorts (or soft shorts in general) are so ridiculously comfortable and have become a great companion of mine in motherhood. Because these shorts are relaxed, a fitted or baby tee can bring some shape to the outfit combo. Throw on a favorite pair of sneakers or—if you’re feeling coquettish—a chic pair of ballet flats.

With a Skirt and Cowgirl Boots
Cowboy boots first saw an insurgence among the masses several years ago. And, thanks to Cowboy Carter, they’re holding strong as a favorite among many. I personally love pairing mine with a graphic tee and denim shorts for a casual, comfortable summer-to-fall transition outfit. Knowing not everyone shares the same affinity for the shorts and tall boots combo, another option to dabble with is a trendy denim skirt. Longer hemlines are more mature and play well in a number of environments—whether it be the grocery store or an event at your child’s school.

With Jeans and a Cozy Cardigan
When the fall weather hits, there is something just so comforting about a favorite graphic tee layered beneath a cozy cardigan. Add a favorite pair of jeans and some plush UGGs, and you’ll have an autumnal, Gilmore girl-inspired ‘fit well equipped to carry you through all your seasonal outings and events. Get your fall bucket list ready!
If you prefer to dress more posh or are headed into the office, swap the cardigan out for a blazer and reach for flats, loafers, or sneakers over UGGs.

With Trousers and Loafers
For a preppy, elevated-casual look, dress up your favorite graphic tee with a chic pair of trousers. A belt subtly upgrades the ensemble by adding an element of completeness. A cardigan winterizes against cooler temps. Loafers and a houndstooth bag add a little academia zhush.
