The very first Toniebox made its debut in Germany in 2016 and hit the U.S. market in 2018. While the oldest of the three, the Toniebox 1 has some features that parents and kids are still fond of today.

Given the simplicity of the product, it is best for kids who are interested only in audio listening.
However, parents should know that it has the fewest features. Unlike the Toniebox 2, it’s for the family who doesn’t want all the bells and whistles (I’ll dive more into this later!). My kids love listening to their Tonies during snack time!
It is the least expensive Toniebox
If you’re looking for a more ‘budget-friendly’ option out of the three, the Toniebox 1 is the least expensive. A starter set (Toniebox Audio Player + Playtime Puppy Figurine) currently costs $69.99 on Amazon, with a bundle starting at $130.
The storage and battery life
The Toniebox 1 has 8GB of storage, while the Toniebox 2 has 32GB. As for battery life, it lasts up to seven hours and requires the Toniebox charging station.
What I like about the Toniebox 1
What I like best about the original Toniebox is its simplicity. For families who are looking for a simple, kid-friendly audio player, the first generation is a great choice!

Toniebox 1 has been discontinued on the Tonies website. However, you can still find the original product on Amazon and Walmart. Another option is to buy one second-hand.
Best Toniebox Overall: Toniebox 2
The Toniebox 2 does everything the original Toniebox does, and so much more! While the Toniebox 1 focuses on strict audio play, in 2025, the Toniebox 2 came out with fun new features for kids of all ages.
The best Toniebox 2 features for toddlers, ages 1+
The Tonies company leaned into making the Toniebox 2 suitable for toddlers. One noticeable feature is that this second edition has rounded edges, and its casing is more padded and more squeezable for tinier tots. Tonies CEO Tobias Wann shared that the “Toniebox 2 is much more than just an updated version.” Wann added, “Its interactive design lets even the youngest children take control of their play with simple, intuitive gestures.”
The best Toniebox 2 features for kids, ages 3+
Along with the audiobooks, stories, and music, the Toniebox 2 stepped it up with a Tonieplay feature. Exclusive to the Toniebox 2, kids can play games with this beloved toy. Parents can find a variety of Tonieplay games on the Tonies website. The board-game-like experience “introduces a new category of interactive, screen-free games, quizzes, and adventures.” With audio prompts, players navigate through stories with challenges and games along the way. Kids can play with their friends and family or play independently, too.
Plus, a great feature that comes with this box is the dynamic light ring. The Light Ring glows in rainbow colors, which “gives helpful light cues to guide kids through the Tonieplay games.”
However, keep in mind that in order to play any Tonieplay Game, the Tonieplay Controller is required. If the controller is not included in a Tonieplay bundle, it can be bought separately for $14.99.
Unlike the original, there is a bedtime and wake-up feature that comes with the Toniebox 2. This addition “supports families from morning routines to nighttime wind-downs,” says Chief Experience Officer Ginny McCormick, and it can be set up through the Tonies app.
The Toniebox 2 is the most expensive
With all the additional features, it makes sense that the Toniebox 2 is the most expensive one out of the three. A starter set starts at $149.99 (Audio player + Tonies figurine), and if your kiddos are interested in the Tonieplay games, you’ll need to purchase them separately.
The storage and battery life
I will add that the storage and the battery life are better than the Toniebox 1. It has 32GB of storage, the battery lasts up to nine hours, and you don’t need the charging station that’s specific to the Toniebox 1. This product requires a USB-C charger, which is included with your Toniebox 2 purchase.
What I like about the Toniebox 2
The best part about the Toniebox 2 is that it’s meant to grow with your child. Toddlers can get accustomed to the audio play aspect, and when they are a little older, they can use the same Toniebox to explore the Tonieplay games! And I can’t forget to mention that the bedtime and wake-up feature is perfect for littles who love listening to their Tonies before bedtime. For kids who need a gentle wake-up every morning, the sunrise alarm helps start their day with pleasant sounds! The features and versatility of the Toniebox 2 make it the best overall pick.

The Toniebox Lite gives the same listening experience as the Toniebox 1 and 2, but it can easily be packed for everyday adventures! Its portability offers a way to give your kids a screen-free activity, whether you’re on a family trip or out running errands.
How to decide if the Toniebox Lite is best for your kid
Just like the other two Tonieboxes, simply place a Tonies figurine on top of the box, and your child can start listening to their favorite stories and songs. The Lite is marketed for kids 1 to 12-years old (or older). However, deciding whether or not to get this cute-sized Toniebox comes down to what you’re using it for.
It’s great for kids with small hands
The Lite is great for kiddos who have small hands. Although I will add that while it’s the smallest and the lightest out of the bunch, I’d be a little wary for kids who love throwing their toys around. It doesn’t have the soft, squeezable shell like the other boxes do. I haven’t tested the durability of the Lite, but I recommend purchasing the Lite cover—sold separately.
Best for kids who already have a Toniebox 1 or Toniebox 2
If your child already has a Toniebox 2 (or the original), it’s a great counterpart, especially if they lug their Tonies wherever they go. Use the Toniebox 1 or 2 at home and the Lite elsewhere.
For families with multiple kids
If you have multiple kids who love the Toniebox but are using it for different purposes (Tonieplay games vs. audioplay), having the Lite comes in handy. For some, it may be the more affordable option if you don’t want to dish out money for another Toniebox 2.
Your child isn’t interested in the Tonieplay
For kids who’ve never had a Toniebox, are not toddler-aged, or aren’t interested in the Tonieplay games, I’d go for this option. The Lite is the upgraded version of the Toniebox 1, but much smaller and easier to carry around.
