It’s honestly hard to remember a time before Ms. Rachel entered our lives and became one of the most beloved icons in children’s entertainment. And if you know her, you certainly love her. Not only does she create educational YouTube content that parents adore for helping their babies and toddlers learn how to talk, but she’s also just a feel-good presence on social media, always offering a friendly smile and sporting a relatable mom uniform outfit. Ms. Rachel’s iconic overalls, pink T-shirt, and matching knotted headband have become synonymous with her brand. And in a new Instagram Reel, Ms. Rach revealed the endearing reason she always wears her pink headband—and the answer instantly resonated with moms everywhere.
Why does Ms. Rachel wear her pink headband?
You might think that Ms. Rachel’s cute uniform is simply a part of her online identity and just an easy way to keep her character’s look recognizable and consistent—and you’re probably right. But on Thursday, October 3, the internet sensation and mom-of-one confessed the real reason she’s always wearing a knotted pink headband in her videos. The answer? “True story! Busy mom with no time to wash hair + lots of short hairs – threw on headband and that’s how it started 💗🤣 #msrachel,” she captioned the post, which now has more than 230,000 likes.
At the start of the clip, the text “why did you decide to wear a headband for the Ms. Rachel outfit?” appears on the screen as Ms. Rachel hides her face from the camera and holds up her pink headband in the frame. As she moves into the screen, Ms. Rach can be seen with her hair pulled back in a ponytail, but with a layer of frizzy, shorter strands sticking up. She then puts her headband on, pushing those shorter hairs back onto her head, and hilariously quips to the camera, “It’s just cute.”
Not surprisingly, many moms were quick to comment on this #IYKYK moment as they, too, understand the power of a hair accessory to help jazz up unwashed hair and disguise shorter pieces due to postpartum hair loss and regrowth. “Omg we love you Ms. Rachel 😂😍,” @heybellafoodie commented. “Are you even a mom if you don’t have a layer of frizz lol,” @missbrittanyboo similarly wrote, with @laura_bogacki15 adding, “The most relatable thing I’ve seen in years!! 🙌 #postpartumhairaintnojoke.”
Ms. Rachel’s cheeky admission hit so close to home for many moms that they poked fun at why the inquiry about her headband was even asked in the first place. “Moms would never ask that question. We already knowwww. 😂,” @getmomstrong wrote. “I feel SO seen. 3+ years postpartum and still rockin’ the baby hairs 🥲,” @lexicohane echoed. “My headband collection tripled postpartum 😂,” @ourlarsonlife added.
We are big fans of Ms. Rachel at The Everymom, so when her latest Reel popped up on Instagram, the link was quickly shared in our internal team Slack chat—and the content especially resonated with our Editorial Intern, Patty. “Def wore this costume just so I could tame my hair for an event last year!” the mom-of-two wrote, sharing a selfie of her sporting Ms. Rachel’s uniform of overalls and a pink headband.
Patty also shared one of her favorite and easy-to-execute mom hacks with the group via Slack. “If your toddler is ever acting out, dress up as Ms. Rachel,” she revealed. Genius! I think I speak for all moms when I say Ms. Rachel is truly the pop culture gift that keeps on giving—and her latest relatable mom moment only made us adore her even more.
