Is there anything better than a comfy T-shirt? For me, the answer will always and forever be a definite no. If you know me (or have seen me on The Everymom’s Instagram Stories), you know that my typical daily uniform is a white graphic T-shirt—thanks to pandemic online shopping, I’m now the proud owner of about 12 very similar options—a pair of denim shorts or leggings, and sneakers.

But the beauty of a good tee is that you can so easily dress it up or down. On the rare occasion that I’m safely hanging with friends or enjoying a restaurant patio dinner nowadays, I’m still rocking a basic T-shirt but will jazz it up with jeans, sandals, a fun bag, simple jewelry, and a matching mask.

I literally throw one on every single day, and regardless of the occasion, my trusty tees are always the backbone to a perfectly simple-yet-cute outfit. (My apologies to all the other chic tops in my closet, I promise you’ll see the light of day again someday.)

If you’re interested in upping your T-shirt game for the remainder of summer, read on for five of my favorite tees, how I style them, and shop a few similar options.

1. The Graphic Tee

Ahh, the graphic tee. If I could have an entire closet of only fun graphic T-shirts, I seriously would. I started randomly picking up white tees featuring colorful sayings or designs from J.Crew and J.Crew Factory over the years, and they remain my very favorites. They’re the perfect top to wear when you want to look cute and put-together and throw a little more personality into an otherwise simple outfit. I most often wear them with denim shorts and white sneakers paired with sunglasses and a mini backpack.

2. The Patterned Tee

From camo and leopard print to hearts and trendy tie-dye, a patterned tee is a great option to dress up or down. I find myself most reaching for these shirts to either pair with leggings on work-from-home weekdays or to throw on with a pair of jeans and sandals when we head over to my in-laws for family takeout night. The best thing about patterned tees is there are so many options to choose from, and they always look stylish.

3. The Pop Culture Tee

Could this T-shirt be any more fun?! Nostalgia remains a big theme when it comes to tees, especially at Target, H&M, Old Navy, and on Etsy, and rocking a top with a pop culture nod is such an easy way to add a little pizazz (do people still say that?) to any outfit. Whether you’re a Friends fan, always quote The Office, are obsessed with Disney, or can’t get enough of vintage concert tees, these are a great way to show off what you love. I usually pair these tees with my most casual summer outfits—Nike shorts and flip-flops—for just hanging out or running to the grocery store.

4. The Classic White Tee

There’s obviously nothing too groundbreaking about a classic white T-shirt but they’ve made a major resurgence in my wardrobe lately. Pairing a white tee with literally anything—I’m talking leggings, jeans, shorts, skirts, joggers, anything!—is such an easy way to look polished and effortlessly chic. A crisp white tee is my go-to for casual summer park hangouts with friends or for dressing up a date night look with slide sandals and a clutch.

5. The Workout Tee

I’m a big proponent of a workout tee that not only does its job and feels comfortable during workouts but can also be paired with shorts or leggings for an athleisure outfit. My favorite basic workout T-shirts are from Old Navy (if you haven’t tried their activewear line, you definitely should!) because they’re soft cotton and can be worn oversized or tied for a fitted look. Regardless of where you buy them from, these tees tend to be oh so comfy and versatile enough that they look nice during an exercise class and while grabbing a drive-thru coffee on the way home—a total win-win!
