10 Unexpected Spring Break Destinations for Families

1. Breckenridge, Colorado

Packing in a few more runs is entirely possible in Breckenridge, where the ski season stretches until May. When parents and older kids aren’t swooshing down groomed trails, while youngsters practice pizza-ing down the bunny slopes alongside trained ski instructors, families can come together for scenic gondola rides, apres ski fondue and hot chocolate, and treks to the giant, wooden Isak Heartstone statue. The former mining town turned winter resort at the base of the Rocky Mountains’ Tenmile Range also has a historic downtown with many great shops and restaurants.

Where to stay

One of the most family-oriented hotels in Colorado, Gravity Haus Breckenridge earns rave reviews for its convenient location within walking distance of several parks, bunk rooms that are a blast for kids of all ages, hearty mountain fare at the restaurant, and hot tubs to warm up after long days outside.

2. Lisbon, Portugal

While you might not think of a European city that’s an ocean away as the front-runner for spring break, Lisbon makes a case so compelling it’s hard not to be persuaded. The mild climate makes it super enjoyable to walk around and explore the vibrant neighborhoods and interesting attractions such as São Jorge Castle and the Botanical Garden of Lisbon. Admittedly, the City of Seven Hills lives up to its name. That means bringing carriers for babies and a lightweight yet sturdy travel stroller for tots. Take advantage of the colorful trams, which double as kid-friendly activities and transportation.

Where to stay

Martinhal Lisbon Chiado Luxury Hotel & Apartments caters to families pining for a stress-free city break. Expect spacious apartment-style accommodations with bunk beds and kitchens, a kids club for ages 6 months to early teens, and an awesome playroom.

3. Montreal, Canada

For a little taste of France without crossing the pond or paying the price tag of Paris, set your sights on Montreal. A quick, relatively inexpensive flight from New York and other East Coast airports, the largest city in the province of Quebec sits on an island in the Saint Lawrence River and supplies a clutch of charm-filled neighborhoods. On the itinerary for families? Bundle up and stroll the quaint, uncrowded streets and ride the Ferris wheel in Le Vieux Montreal. Let the little ones burn off some energy at Mount Royal. Did we mention Montreal is famous for its hand-rolled, wood-fired bagels?

Where to stay

If you’ve ever wanted to treat the whole family to a five-star stay, then spring break at the Four Seasons Hotel Montreal is the perfect opportunity. The luxury property wows with big rooms that fit the whole crew and thoughtful service. And the off-peak rates won’t blow your entire travel budget.

4. San Juan, Puerto Rico

San Juan International Airport (SJU) is a major hub, which boosts your chances of scoring great deals on flights. Old San Juan brims with cobbled lanes, colorful architecture, and historic landmarks. Food tours are a great way to taste all the local flavors. Castillo San Felipe del Morro, an important military outpost for Spain and later the United States, is another top attraction to visit with kids. Beaches line the Isla Verde strip. Venturing to other parts of Puerto Rico gives travelers the chance to do rainforest treks and bioluminescent kayaking excursions.

Where to stay

Parents (especially those with young kiddos who still nap during the day) tout the roomy suites featuring terraces overlooking the waves at the Condado Vanderbilt Hotel. The five-star property also has a terrific restaurant for those nights when you’re too tired to leave for dinner.

5. Charleston, South Carolina

We love a city that immerses travelers in its history and charm. Charleston does just that. In between admiring the beautiful churches and colorful facades, shopping along Kings Street, and imagining what it would be like to inhabit the grand historic mansions that line The Battery, learn about Civil War history at Fort Sumter. It’s also packed with kid-friendly attractions such as the South Carolina Aquarium and the Children’s Museum of the Lowcountry. Even picky eaters won’t be able to pass up local favorites like shrimp and grits.

Where to stay

Hotel Bennett pairs resort-level perks—among them a rooftop pool, spa, restaurant, and pretty-in-pink champagne lounge—and residential-style rooms with tubs and an unbeatable location overlooking Marion Square in the heart of downtown Charleston.

6. Chicago, Illinois

While it’s possible to be blustery and cold in Chicago over spring break, families who don’t mind bundling up get to snap selfies in front of the Bean, glide around the Millennium Park Ice Rink, soak in the panoramic views from Chicago 360, the aptly named observatory on the 94th floor of the John Hancock Building, and walk on the wild side at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The Windy City also excels in educational attractions, from the Chicago Children’s Museum to the Shedd Aquarium. Slime lovers should hightail it to the Shloomoo Institute. Not to mention that deep-dish pizza is the perfect way to refuel after a fun-filled day. Plus, it’s road trip-able for many in the Midwest for a short Spring Break getaway

Where to stay

Check into The Langham, Chicago for rooms and suites with giant tubs, snuggly beds, and blackout shades that promise to mitigate bath time and bedtime meltdowns. For an extra special experience, the kids won’t soon forget, plan a movie night with popcorn in the private cinema.

Ambergris Caye may be the largest island and most popular travel destination in Belize—however, there’s still plenty of authentic culture and natural beauty to discover. The prices remain reasonable, and the laid-back energy appeals to families who need a stress-free escape. Sandy beaches abound. The abundance of water sports and snorkeling sites are ideal for active travelers. Many sailing and reef excursions depart from the town of San Pedro. It’s also where you’ll find seafood restaurants, art galleries, and the Belize Chocolate Company.

Where to stay

Lean into the breezy vacation vibes at Pelican Reef Villas Resort. An under-the-radar location situated away from the hustle and bustle of San Pedro, it’s a serene and scenic spot for families keen to reconnect while swimming in the pool and frolicking on the private, white-sand beach.

8. Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik tops the list of the best European cities to take kids. And despite Iceland having a reputation as being on the expensive side, getting there doesn’t cost a fortune, thanks to budget flights on WOW Air. Once you touch down, a unique spring break vacation—with outdoor adventure and culture—awaits. Just be sure to pack warm clothes to ensure every member of the crew is cozy while dog sledding, trekking through lava fields, or just walking around downtown. Budding marine biologists can visit Whales of Iceland, a natural history museum in the Grandi harbor district that focuses on education and conservation. Seeking R&R? Plan a kid-friendly Icelandic spa day at the Blue Lagoon

9. Isla Mujeres, Mexico

Isla Mujeres, an island just eight miles off the coast of Cancun, delivers a far less touristy alternative that trades high-rise chain hotels, bars, and late-night partying for beautiful beaches, family-friendly resorts, and an unhurried pace. Crews will love snorkeling, swimming, and getting some sun at Playa Norte. On the southern tip, Punta Sur is home to a lighthouse, Mayan ruins, and a sea turtle sanctuary. Eating fresh-caught conch with your toes in the sand really sums up a family trip to this low-key Mexican destination.

For families drawn to the ease of an all-inclusive vacation experience, Mia Reef Isla Mujeres surely fits the bill. Perched at the northern tip of the island, it provides a mix of multi-bedroom suites and villas along with four restaurants, an outdoor pool, a spa, and direct beach access.

10. St. Augustine Beach, Florida

Catching rays in St. Augustine doesn’t have to break the bank. Unlike Daytona Beach and Miami—which tend to be mobbed with college co-eds—under-the-radar St. Augustine Beach attracts a very different type of spring breaker. The small city on Anastasia Island has wide, sandy beaches and a super chill vibe. Ocean Hammock Park offers trails and picnic areas. The playground and splash zone at St. Johns County Ocean Pier are sure to be the highlights for little travelers. Cap off a fun family day with dinner at a casual seafood restaurant and ice cream along A1A Beach Boulevard.
