When it comes to beauty products and self-care, it can be hard to find a product that is both cost-effective and that also works for your skin type. As a Woman of Color, I have the added challenge of finding products that not only work but actually match my skin tone.

Now, I’m not someone who can’t fathom leaving home without makeup (of course, there is nothing wrong with that), but lately, I’ve started to fall in love with self-care items that make me feel more like a woman and less like a robot mom whose sole purpose is to feed, clothe, and take care of my children.

I’ve recently become obsessed with watching shows like Glow Up on Netflix and dozens of TikTokkers that post breathtaking transformation videos of the way makeup can not only enhance their beauty but reflect their personalities.

Now, of course, as a mom, I am conscious of not spending too much money on these products but I also will save up for quality products that would suit my skin as a Woman of Color but also support WOC businesses. I’m also looking for a wide range of shades and opt for products that are moisturizing because I tend to have really dry skin and get a bit ashy, unlike some of my white mom friends.

Here are some of my favorite make-up and self-care items created by Women of Color.

Uoma Beauty
1. Say What?! Foundation

This foundation matches the undertones of my olive skin color and smoothes my skin. I love that it is buildable coverage, meaning I can add on more layers if I need it on certain days, and it doesn't feel heavier on my skin.

2. Ex-Factor Lipshine

This is such a beautiful shade that not only adds vibrant color, but also moisturizes. Lipmatic brings a pop to any look, but what I love most is that it compliments all skin tones. I have vastly different tones and shades depending on the season, so it is important that my makeup looks great everyday of the year.

3. Blockbuster Wonder Cream with Hyaluronic Acid

I've struggled with finding face cream that hydrates without leaving an oily finish—but now that I've tried this night cream, I am happy my search ends here! I love the thick consistency and how it melts into your pores, without leaving you weighed down in fragrance.

4. Diamond Bomb Highlighter

I am a sucker for a good highlighter, and the pink and gold shimmer tones enhance the beauty of my skin, especially during the summer months when my skin is a more rich brown. This particular product leaves your skin glowing and enhances your features without a sweaty look of some other highlighters.

5. Everynight Eyeshadow Palette

I love that the colors in this palette are so vibrant, and the shades are long-lasting. But the best part is that they blend very well, which allows you to turn any day look into a night.

6. Intense Hold Styling Gel

I’ve tried dozens of hair products for my curly hair, but this one helps hold my curls without drying them out. You can also use this gel for your edges, buns, or ponytails which makes it a great staple.

7. Brown Cake Mascara

I love the vintage packaging of this Latina-owned brand with the aesthetic of being in a world like the hit Netflix show "Bridgerton", while also having the effectiveness of the 21st century. In addition to being eco-friendly with refillable cartridges, it also can be used to fill in eyebrows or as an eyeliner.

8. Violet-C Brightening Serum

This is a great oil-free skin serum that helps moisturize, soften, and also leaves your skin looking brighter. With some products it can take a while to see results, but with this serum I have seen my dark spots fade quickly after adding it into my daily regimen.
