By now it’s more than likely you’ve heard of the “coastal grandmother aesthetic.” Afterall, the microtrend inspired by mature, affluent coastal dwellers has had the wardrobes and home decor of many in a chokehold for several years running. And while we’re not looking to retire our linen pants and breezy button-downs anytime soon, it seems the internet has a new salty fashion trend of choice: the fisherman aesthetic.

Yep, you read that right. But before you write this new trend off as not being your cup of tea—or perhaps, seafood chowder—hear me out: I think the fisherman aesthetic is a liberating new microtrend for moms.

Keep reading to learn more about the trend, why it’s incredibly practical for moms, and gain some ideas on how to style it for yourself.

What is the Fisherman Aesthetic?

Similar to its predecessor, coastal grandma, the fisherman aesthetic is (as you probably guessed) heavily inspired by the styles of the coast. It’s nautical in color palette and motif, and laid back in nature. But rather than being posh, dainty, and understated, this trend is rugged, refreshingly carefree, and unabashedly maritime.

The fisherman aesthetic is all about layers and dressing for—wait for it—real life. Real adventures that take place against the backdrop of real weather (see: rain, mud, grey skies, and more). And this is a quality I personally believe many microtrends drop the ball on.

Because of its high focus on practicality, common pieces you’ll see being categorized as fisherman-approved include cable-knit and wool sweaters, rain boots and jackets, caps, loose denim and corduroy pants, boat shoes, and striped shorts. Of course, anything nautical is also more than fair game. Think sea-inspired charm jewelry, graphic sweaters and tees featuring marine life and coastal locations, rope belts, fisherman sandals, and any garment bearing a Breton stripe.

How to Wear the Fisherman Aesthetic As a Mom

While this trend can be rocked any time of year, I’d argue that it feels especially fitting as we head into the warmer months. It feels incredibly natural to don a raincoat and clogs on a misty spring day, or a pair of pull-on shorts and a nautical graphic tee for an afternoon at the beach

Whether you’re looking to dive headfirst into the aesthetic (as a New England fanatic, you’ll find me in this camp) or would simply like to dip your toe, here are some approachable ways to style the fisherman aesthetic as a mom.

Reach for Chunky Knits

It’s no secret that fishermen are known for their enviable sweaters. One of the simplest ways to channel this aesthetic is through the donning of a classic sweater. Those composed of quality materials—from wool to 100 percent cotton—tend to more naturally lend themselves to the trend. Cable-knit pieces or those boasting a sailor collar also seamlessly signal a nautical vibe. Layer or drape over a striped tee to fully lean in.

Embrace Nautical Pieces and Accessories

When it comes to this trend, the more oceanic the better. Fish charm necklaces and bracelets are both especially trendy and on-theme and are an easy way to make just about any outfit a little more maritime. If subtly is more your style, consider adding a seafaring charm to your bag à la Jane Birkin, or giving shoe charms a whirl.

Overly nautical tops, dresses, and pants are also an effortless means to embracing the aesthetic and can be a really fun way to shake up your everyday apparel. Common prints you’ll see in stores right now include those of lobsters, fish, anchors, and sea shells.

Don’t Shy Away From Practicality

Whether it’s a pair of rubber clogs or a durable rain jacket, this trend is all about practicality. Layers and resilient materials are always welcome. Truly, the less you “try,” the more likely you are to nail the aesthetic. So don’t think twice about those baggy jeans and rainboots as you run out the door to pick your kiddo up from school on a stormy day.

When In Doubt, Reach for Stripes

Striped tops are one of those items that will never go out of style, so it’s likely you already have some on-trend pieces hanging in your closet. If classic, horizontal stripes have never quite been your thing, have no fear: vertical stripe pants, shorts, and skirts are on the up and up and contribute to this trend in a major way.

Play With Textures

I’d argue that the driver of this aesthetic’s visual appeal is its bold embrace of texture and its deliberate choice to throw them all together. From coarse rope to tufted corduroy, plush waffle knit, and beyond, the more texture you can add to an outfit the better. If you’re unsure where to start, rope belts, crocheted totes, and statement gold jewelry are all approachable, versatile, and inherent to the trend.
