And given that my kids are huge fans of the original Toniebox and the Toniebox 2, I knew I had to find out if the newest edition holds up to its legacy. What is a Toniebox Lite?
If you haven’t heard of the beloved toy, it’s a modern-day CD player. According to the Tonies company, the Toniebox is an “audio player for kids designed to bring audio stories, music, and learning to life for kids of all ages.” In fact, the Toniebox has dominated as one of the best toys for kids since it hit the U.S. market in 2020. In 2025, the company released the Toniebox 2, and in August 2026, the Toniebox Lite was released. And as a Toniebox expert (I own the Toniebox 1, Toniebox 2, and the Toniebox Lite), I can see parents opting for the newest product—instead of the original Toniebox—that parents and kids have come to love.

Toniebox 1 vs. Toniebox Lite
If you want to know whether the Toniebox Lite is better than the Toniebox 1, my short answer is, “Yes.” The Toniebox Lite is comparable to the original. The Lite does everything the Toniebox 1 does, but it’s an upgraded version. For one thing, I noted that the price is slightly lower. It has a sleep timer, audio fade, and it’s a better travel companion (it’s smaller than the Toniebox 1!). Here’s a quick guide to the differences between the Toniebox 1 and the Toniebox Lite:

My Toniebox Lite Review
From product setup to the design, I’m reviewing all the key features to note about the Toniebox Lite.
The size and design make it kid-friendly
The first thing I noticed after unboxing the Toniebox Lite was its smaller design. My kids love their Toniebox 1 and 2, but I’ll admit that it isn’t the best for travel. Measuring 3.9 inches all around, it’s easier to pack along with Tonies figurines.
Although I will add that while it’s the smallest and the lightest Toniebox, I’d be a little wary of kids who love throwing their toys around. It doesn’t have the soft, squeezable shell like the Toniebox 1 and Toniebox 2. I haven’t tested the durability of the Lite, but I recommend purchasing the Lite cover—sold separately. The cover does have some nice padding and squishiness that I anticipate can handle any tumbles. Plus, it’s easy to remove, making swapping out different colors of the covers an easy process.
Setup was easy
Setting up the Toniebox Lite took less than five minutes. I plugged the charger into the box, added it to my already downloaded Tonies app, and followed the prompts to connect to WiFi. With this quick and easy setup, kids are able to listen in no time.
The storage and battery life
Like the first gen, the Toniebox Lite has 8GB of storage, with up to six hours of battery life. But unlike the Toniebox 1, the Lite uses USB-C for charging (sold separately). Personally, I’m glad that the Lite uses USB-C for charging. I found that the original charging station, which is specific to the original Toniebox, to be quite clunky.
Sound quality is slightly better
When it comes to the sound quality of the Toniebox Lite, it sounds clearer than the Toniebox 1. However, the difference isn’t that significant. There is some slight muffling in the original product, but I was only able to tell because I tested both boxes right next to each other.
The Toniebox Lite has a sleep timer with audio fade
Something that the Toniebox Lite has that the Toniebox 1 doesn’t is the sleep timer with audio fade feature. I was able to set this up in the app, but kids can easily turn this feature on by squeezing both ears for a few seconds (the box will remember the last sleep timer setting). Parents can select the time frame in which they want the Toniebox to go into sleep mode, and the volume gently starts to dim before it fully powers off.
This definitely comes in handy if my kids want to fall asleep to a story, or if I want to set a time limit on this quiet time activity.
What I like about the Toniebox Lite
After reviewing this new Tonies product, I’d have to say that my favorite features of the Toniebox Lite is its size, making it easy to pack when the kids and I are on the go. It’s fun to look back in my rearview mirror and see them look out the window while listening to the cutest stories from their favorite Tonies characters.

With three different versions of the Toniebox, it may have you asking, “Is the Toniebox Lite best for my kid?” Deciding whether or not to get this cute-sized Toniebox comes down to what you’re using it for. Here’s who should get the Toniebox Lite:
It’s great for kids with small hands
The Lite is great for kids who have small hands. In fact, while the Toniebox 1 is marketed for kids ages 3 and up, the Lite is marketed for kids as young as 1. The size alone makes this new edition perfect for littles who aren’t quite ready for the Toniebox 2. Compared to the original Toniebox, which measures almost 5 inches all around, the Toniebox Lite is 3.9 inches all around.
Best for kids who already have a Toniebox 1 or Toniebox 2
If your child already has a Toniebox 2 (or the original), it’s a great counterpart, especially if they lug their Tonies wherever they go. Use the Toniebox 1 or 2 at home and the Lite elsewhere.
For families with multiple kids
If you have multiple kids who love the Toniebox but are using it for different purposes (Tonieplay games vs. audioplay), having the Lite comes in handy. For some, it may be the more affordable option if you don’t want to dish out money for another Toniebox 2.
Your child isn’t interested in the Tonieplay
For kids who’ve never had a Toniebox, are not toddler-aged, or aren’t interested in the Tonieplay games (exclusive to the Toniebox 2), I’d go for this option.
