10 Ways to Keep the Magic of the Holidays Alive for Kids

Whether you are a full-on Santa family or just dabble in the good-old fun of the season (Elf on your shelf?), the season brings about a lot of opportunities for believing in magic. Many parents often go back and forth on the Santa thing – many aren’t so comfortable with the white lies often involved and others basically camp out at the figurative North Pole for the remainder of the year.

We’re a low-key Santa family ourselves, never pushing too hard or going too out-of-our-way to create traditions or expectations which we couldn’t later explain. Writing letters to Santa and spending Christmas Eve baking cookies for the jolly old Elf, and then tracking his sleigh as we get ready for bed are a few of the rituals we all wholeheartedly enjoy, so that’s what we keep it at.

But, this year, as my 5-year-old started questioning all the little pieces of the Santa story that don’t quite make sense (it’s actually quite simple to pull apart, isn’t it?), I got a little sad. He’s only five, I thought, and he has his whole life to live in stark reality. Why not let the magic live on a little longer? After all, the ability to believe in things you cannot always see is a skill he’s going to need to in the future – to believe in things like science and humanity and himself.

If you, like me, are needing to pull a few strings to keep the Santa game strong, here’s a few tricks to keep up your sleeve.

Make reindeer food and scatter outside…

Create Santa’s snowy footprints near the tree…

Write a letter to Santa…

And have Santa write a letter back…

Opps… the reindeer dropped a bell on the sleigh…

Make sure you track Santa’s whereabouts…

Make a special key for Santa if you don’t have a chimney…

Get in on the Elf on the Shelf trend…

Use a special wrapping paper for Santa’s presents…

Hide Santa’s peppermint scent near the tree…
